Newsletter No.94
November 16th - November 22nd 2003

Well, we're now in full swing towards Christmas. The trucks continue to bring in stock and things are starting to get a little crowded here at bmusic. Hence the mid-week pre-Chrissie clearance we sent out that were well patronised, and not surprisingly as much of the gear on offer was at well below cost price.
Our Christmas catalogues start to head out this weekend in our domestic area and these are also available to our internet customers, just check out the Featured Product section of this week's newsletter.

A new Where Are They Now? this week, and another by request. This time from Wayne up in the Northern Territory. It's a blast from the past but this guy hasn't been sitting on his hands since topping the charts. Just quietly, this feature was a hell of a lot easier to put together as we were dealing with only a solo artist Where Are They Now?, not a band that's had about 10 members pass through it in it's time. If anyone ever requests a Where Are They Now? on Miami Sound Machine I can tell you the answer right now :)

All the regulars including Hot eBay Sightings, Feature Interview, Featured Product and more are all inside Issue 94 of the bmusic Newsletter.

  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - BILLY FIELD

There are a couple of myths surrounding Billy Field, a man responsible for often covered hit "Bad Habits". The first myth is that Billy was an American who moved to Australia to kickstart his musical career. Another is that he was an A & R rep for Warner Bros. Records and moved over here for his career and happened to A & R for himself. Neither is true, in fact Billy was raised in Urana in rural New South Wales. He grew up there and worked on a station in the Riverina region through his teens and early twenties before heading to Sydney to have a crack at the music industry.

Despite his association with pop music Billy Field was an extremely talented jazz and blues musician, influences that can be heard on his first, and most commercially successful, record "Bad Habits". The album, released in 1981, featured the hugely successful single "Bad Habits" and a second single that also reached Number One on the Australian charts, "You Weren't In Love With Me".

Field's next album, "Try Biology" went gold within weeks of it's release and was followed by an adventurous third album, "Say Yes", which featured the entire string section of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. But none of Billy Field's releases could eclipse the phenomenal success of his debut and he was relegated to "one hit wonder" status across the globe.

But that was far from the end of Billy Field's involvement in the Australian music industry. He had set up his own studio in Woolloomooloo in New South Wales known as Canteen Studios where many a jazz and blues artist, amongst others, laid down their tracks. In the early Nineties he changed the name of the studio to Paradise Studios and it continues to operate, now in Gosford on the Central Coast of New South Wales.

Billy's live work included his long-running jazz group the Bad Habits Band which toured and released his fourth and fifth albums throughout the Nineties. Professionally, almost since day one, Billy has been responsible for countless arrangements in Australia for print music and performances alike. One of his latest projects is for educational jazz big band Kinderjazz (the group has a great website HERE). Billy is one of a number of arrangers, including the prolific and legendary Australian arranger Arthur Greenslade, who supply arrangements for the Kinderjazz group and the adult Kinderjazz project, KJ Allstars Swing Orchestra. Billy has also recorded and produced a number of Kinderjazz releases at Paradise Studios.

Besides earning his keep making great jazz CD's and arranging for some of the world's top talent Billy has had his classic "Bad Habits" recorded by artist's from around the world for many years. The most recent version was by ex-Van Halen front man David Lee Roth on his 2002 release. Roth also covered Billy's "I'm Easy" on his 1986 album "Eat 'Em And Smile".

So that's it, Billy Field's story short and sweet. Next time you're in Woolloomooloo swing by Judge Street and see if one of Australia's finest musical talents is around the place.

    UPDATE - 29th JANUARY 2006
Subscriber Darren dropped us a line to give us a few details about Billy Field. Thanks to Darren for getting in touch with us, this is what Darren had to say:

Billy Field's 4th album (released 1990?) was an album of covers, that also included new versions of his own hits Bad Habits and You Weren't In Love with Me. His 5th album was called Western Light (released mid-late 90s). Last year a 6th album was released - a 21 track compilation of Billy's four original albums, entitled "You Weren't In Love with Me - The Best of Billy Field."
Drop us an e-mail if you'd like us to track down some of stars of the past for you and feature them in Where Are They Now? or if you have anything to add or correct from one of our features.

HOT eBay SIGHTINGS OF THE WEEK

A Marshall JCM800 50 Watt head and 1960A Quad on offer, NOT a 2204 as can be seen from the picture. The seller may well get their $1,500 opening bid and some more. Quads have added little value to a Marshall JCM800 sale so $1500 for this lot will give owners of the more fancied 2203 and 2204 models a good idea of what their legendary amps will be worth. And to think you could pick them up for maybe $500 only two years ago:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2573538848&category=1288

The Fender Squire Stratocaster Guitars that were Made In Japan are certainly becoming more and more sought after, and still very, very affordable:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2571779151&category=2384

And Japanese Fender Stratocasters continue to grow in popularity and value (with excellent reason). Take a look at this completely refinished one for an example. The work performed on this instrument has done nothing to help it's value as the original Japanese Strats from the early Eighties are great just the way they were:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2571817390&category=2384

For those unfamiliar with Greco Guitars, they were produced by Ibanez for the Japanese domestic market. No wonder Gibson and Fender got upset with Ibanez for their copies. Take a look at the aesthetic similarities of this example:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2571796805&category=2384

Now here's a direct comparison for eBay values. We sold a Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster a few weeks ago on eBay in mint condition. Now we sold ours for $1,486, and we provided several detailed picturs in our auction description. This seller ahs a "near new" one, with no pictures at all and they are asking $3,500! What do you think of their chances:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2570181804&category=2384

Wow! 1975 Gretsch Country Gentleman. However, this auction has many of the hallmarks of a scam. We are not saying it is but here's something common to most scam auctions that this one has:
  • 3-Day Listing (get it over with before anyone cottons on)
  • New Seller with zero feedback (registered the day the auctions started)
  • User registered in a country other than that in which the item is located
  • Bidder ID kept private (this is done by scammers to stop other eBayers warning bidders)
  • Very, very limited description

  • If one was interested in this lot it would be wise to send an email to the seller and see what sort of response is received. Should give you a fair idea of the validity of the listing. If you couldn't be bothered e-mailing them out of interest here's what they said when we e-mailed and asked about the condition, how long they'd owned the guitar, asked for further photos, and which method of payment they'd accept. You be the judge:
    Hello,
This guitar is to be 8, in period in good condition, I it possessed for 2 years. My forgiveness no longer possesses the picture. for paymenth i am only accep wire transfer.
For you i can sell this item USD $ 4500 + shipping cost. Please reply me and give your shipping address so i can calculate totaly price.
    reply me soon
    Regards
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2573232562&category=2385

This Yamaha MFC-06 MIDI Foot Controller can work most any MIDI guitar effects rack around so it could be a steal for somebody:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2573562930&category=1289

Ah, the old W Bin. MORE POWER! This seller has a stack of "bottom end" for your PA if you live in Melbourne. Wouldn't recommend paying shipping interstate for one of these puppies:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2573325341&category=3278

And lastly this week, from eBay in the U.S. possibly the highest priced asked yet for a Selmer Mark VI Saxophone. This one is probably the best ever offered on eBay too so the seller is welll justified in asking more. Can't see it fetching the almost US$10,000 asking price yet, but it's only a matter of time. An exquisite saxophone indeed:

    THIS WEEK'S FEATURE ARTICLE

How Long Is Too Long? is another interesting read from Kenny Kerner. It poses a number of questions, questions bands looking to get further in their careers should all ask themselves, new and old bands alike. The fact that Kenny Kerner is an artist manager and he has such a positive view about bands and musicians is certainly something refreshing. Must be nice to be managed by Kerner!

    FEATURED ARTIST - DREADNAUGHT

We've been waiting to feature Dreadnaught here for a good long while. Not just because one of the boys is our good buddy and ESP endorsee, but because the band have been around for a fair while now and have built quite the following. Due in no small part to their consistently infectious and energetic live performances. The reason we haven't featured them until now is because their official website hadn't had an update in about eighteen months and you could've learnt as much about the band by visiting the Wham! website as you could've by visiting the Dreadnaught website (i.e. nothing). Thankfully she's been given a tweak and regular updates are going on all the time. Whilst it's no Amazon.com the site is still a good place to find out just who Dreadnaught are and find out when they might be playing in a venue near you.
The lads are currently in pre-production for their newest release in almost three years and we're told their are some pretty big changes afoot musically. So get on over to the Dreadnaught site and take a peek, support the poor ol' guitarist/webmaster as he tries to get the site up and hip and happenin'.

    Visit the Official Dreadnaught Website.

Each week's Feature Artist is selected from the Band Links page, so get on and list your favourite group at the Band Link page and they could be the Feature Artist at bmusic.com.au.

    GEAR WANTED

  • A subscriber is after a Steinberger 4 string bass or a copy such as a Cort, Hohner or Riverhead. Doesn't have to be the original Steinberger. Would also be interested in the newer Steinberger Spirit.

  • Fender® Bass Case. We need a late 60's - 70's black tolex Fender® Precision® Bass Case for a customer to present to his father for his upcoming birthday. His old man has been lugging his 68 P-Bass around the country in the same case he got with the instrument when he bought it new. He'd like to replace it with a period case.

  • Marshall JCM900. A customer is looking for a 50 Watt JCM900 Head and 1960A Quad Box if anyone can help out.

  • Second-hand saxes, clarinets and flutes. The new school year is fast approaching. We are looking for good quality, good condition, saxophones, clarinets and flutes for the approaching year to help out those parents who are a little dubious about their child's level of commitment to their chosen instrument and, subsequently, don't want to spend a bomb on what might turn out to be a fad. If you or your kids have taken up the horn but chucked it in, don't take it to Cashies. Brands like Yamaha, Yanigasawa, Selmer, Buescher etc. are always welcome at bmusic.

  • Marshall JCM800's. That's right, we STILL want 'em. JCM800 2203 and 2204 models. Mainly after heads but will consider combos.

  • Fender Silverface Bassmans. Now two guys are after heads and cabs from the 60's and 70's. AB165 heads more particularly. Later AB135's may also be of interest. Of course, if you have an early Blackface you'd like to sell for the price of a Silverface then we'd be more than happy to entertain those too!

  • If there's something you've been trying to get your hands on, let us know and we will list it here for you. You never know.

If you spot something in the U.S. or Canada you're keen on let us know. We have contacts in those territories who, for a small fee, can act on your behalf in any transactions and make sure you get your stuff safe and sound.
