January 5th - January 11th 2003

The festivities are all but over and things are beginning to return to some semblance of normality. A few freight hiccups in the madness of the Christmas rush have served us up a couple of headaches here at bmusic, and there were another couple of headaches experienced this past week that had nothing to do with freight at all!

The addition of the new lines has recommenced this week, the huge Hohner harmonica range being the subject of this week's new stuff. A great new article for this week's Featured Article, the Hot ebay Sightings for the Week, Where Are They Now?, and more all await you inside Issue 49 of the bmusic Weekly Newsletter.

  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - GUNS 'N' ROSES

Most of you will know that Guns 'N' Roses continues to this day with the only original member being singer W. Axl Rose. Rose has been working with a string of musicians since around 1995 on 'Chinese Democracy', the first Gunners album for almost a decade. Chinese Democracy was scheduled for release in late 2002 and the band had been touring in readiness for that release. That 'comeback' tour has, in true Axl Rose style, now been scrapped.
But what of the original members of the breakthrough band that shook the music world in the late eighties with their hard-rocking sound and attitude? The band had pretty well imploded by 1994, nine years after it's first official line-up was finalised and just a year after their punk covers album 'The Spaghetti Incident' was released.
Even though the band had essentially finished by '95/'95 bassist Duff McKagan was the last of the original members to quit and that wasn't until 1997. This was only a few months after Axl Rose purchased the name rights to Guns 'N' Roses.
This week we will take a look at what the key members that made up the Guns 'N' Roses line-up in their heyday have been up to since their departure from the group. Collectively there is something very special brewing which we received news of Saturday, January 4th, 2003. But you'll have to wait until we've had a look at the individual members before we get to that. Most of the old members could live very comfortably on royalties from their days in Gunners alone. After all, 'Appetite For Destruction' still sells over 2000 copies per week across the world to this day. But all have kept busy making music and have been involved in some very diverse projects, with varying levels of success.

The Gunners broke through in 1997 with their incredible 'Appetite For Destruction' album. The singles 'Welcome To The Jungle' and the massive hit 'Sweet Child O' Mine' hit MTV with a vengeance and within months the band were a worldwide success story.
Hard rock fans, who'd been subjected to an endless barrage of glam metal, found new hope in the sound and attitude of Guns 'N' Roses and their audience grew quickly. It could be argued that if Geffen records hadn't found success with Guns 'N' Roses in the manner they did Geffen, and the record industry as a whole, wouldn't have gone in search of the next generation of megastar rockers like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Either way you look at it, without Guns 'N' Roses the musical landscape of the past 15 years would have been vastly different.
'Lies', a compilation of old and new, electric and acoustic material, was released as a filler in between 'Appetite' and the band's ambitious two-record release of 1991. The 'Use You Illusion' albums were released in 1991 and the band set about touring in support of those releases for the next two years. This author had the great privilege of catching one of the show's on that tour at Melbourne's Calder Park on the Australia Day long weekend in January of 1993. It was, without the question, the greatest show I have experienced. 85,000 fans breaking Australian attendance records for such an event. Pearls & Swine, Rose Tattoo and Skid Row all joined the Gunners on the huge bill. A 38 degree day kicking off at around noon which saw sticky rain come around 4:30 pm, followed by another barrage of high-30's heat. What an atmosphere.
I recall, as the sun dropped below the horizon and the Gunners took the stage, a non-stop procession of ambulances ferrying heat-stricken and injured fans out of the venue. As one ambulance left another would immediately take it's place and this went on without rest for the entire G 'N' R set and beyond. But I digress.

Few bands have such an impact on the music scene as Guns 'N' Roses did. The band's impact on the music scene of their day could be compared with the likes of the Rolling Stones and Nirvana. This is not to make a direct comparison between the musical ability or originality of the band, just an observation regarding how a group can manage to captivate and alter the course of an industry.
Any arguments to the contrary would be healthily debated so let us have 'em.

We hope you enjoy our look at the boys of G 'N' R.

Axl Rose W. Axl Rose - Vocals
Original vocalist and owner of the Guns 'N' Roses name, Axl Rose has been in and out of the public eye since his old band stopped touring in the mid-Nineties. He has also been in and out of trouble, having some firearms incidents along the way.
Rose has been working on the latest album bearing the Guns 'N' Roses moniker for years. The album, 'Chinese Democracy', is scheduled for release in June, 2003, after a string of musicians made appearances during it's creation.
Rumour and speculation surrounded the project from day one. Some of the artists who had been invited to contribute were less than thankful when their tenure was up. It seems Axl Rose was not the easiest guy to work for and many musicians came and went during the project's lifetime.
Among those to contribute to the album, whether or not their work ends up on the final release, were:
    Queen guitarist Brian May
Basketballer and sometimes rapper Shaquille O'Neal
    Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde
    Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro
A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese

Those sho survived the making of the album and went on to, briefly, tour behind the release were:
Dizzy Reed, original Guns 'N' Roses keyboard player
Tommy Stinson - Former Replacements bassist
Robin Finck - former Nine Inch Nails guitarist
Paul 'Huge' Tobias - guitarist and former childhood friend of Axl Rose. (It's not known whether Tobias is still a member of G 'N' R as another guitarist, Richard Fortus, is rumoured to have taken Tobias' spot).
Shredding prog-rock guitarist and another of Axl's childhood friends, Buckethead.
Former Primus drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia
Secondary keyboard player and special effects man Chris Pittman.

We won't hold our breath for Axl's next move, but after seeing the band play at the American Music Awards it would be nice to see what they've come up with of their own. Axl seemed a little 'puffed' during the old material medley they performed but the band were unquestionably hot!
    Slash - Guitar
Slash, real name Saul Hudson, has worked on his main solo project Slash's Snakepit since even before he officially left Guns 'N' Roses. The group has released 'It's Five O'Clock Somewhere' and 'Ain't Life Grand' during that time and conducted world tours and a stack of U.S. national tours. It seems Slash really enjoys his Snakepit work and does it for just that - the enjoyment.
He's hooked up with his former bandmates many times to guest on their work or vice versa. He's also been known to jump on stage here and there to help out an old bandmate.
But his guest appearances don't stop with his old Gunners pals. His most recent guest spot was for Ray Charles' 2002 release 'Ray Charles Sings For America'. Other guest spots include work with Cheap Trick, Rod Stewart, Doro Pesch, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, his famous stint with Alice Cooper, Lenny Kravitz, Eazy-E, Spinal Tap, Brian May, Paul Rodgers, Carole King, Marta Sanchez, Sammy Hagar, Sam Kinison, Michael Monroe, Carmine Appice, Boz Scaggs, Insane Clown Posse and Graham Bonnet. Michael Jackson's smash singles 'Black Or White' and 'Give in To Me' also featured Slash on lead guitar.
    Slash
Izzy Stradlin Izzy Stradlin - Guitar
Izzy Stradlin was the rhythm machine behind Guns 'N' Roses rocking guitar parts. After writing the bulk of the 'Use Your Illusion' albums Izzy had had enough and quit G 'N' R less than two months after the albums were released.
He soon went on to work on his Izzy Stradlin & The Ju Ju Hounds project and the band were well received internationally due to Izzy's former role in the biggest band of the era.
He has guested many times with old bandmates Duff McKagan and Slash as well as releasing a large body of work with his other projects 117 degrees, Ride On, River and On Down The Road.
Izzy, after leaving Guns 'N' Roses in November of 1991, was destined to play with the group a few more times. He replaced the injured Gilby Clarke to perform with the band in May of 1993 at a Milton Keynes, England show and went on to play the next three shows as Clarke's replacement.
Stradlin has toured the globe numerous times with this Ju Ju Hounds group and continues to make music like there's no tomorrow.
    Duff McKagan - Bass
Duff, the last of the original G 'N' R members to leave the group has been one of the most prolific music makers of his old bandmates. His Duff McKagan solo work was well under way before he officially split from Axl.
Bands Duff's been a full-time member of (either playing guitar, bass or drums) include Loaded, The Neurotic Outsiders, The Fartz and The Fastbacks.
He has guested on numerous artists' work, as well as on the work of his former bandmates Gilby Clarke, Izzy Stradlin and Slash.
    Duff McKagan
Steven Adler Steven Adler - Drums
Steven Adler was booted from Guns 'N' Roses before the recording and release of the 'Use Your Illusion' albums. Although the whole band had problems with drinking and drugs, Adler was the worst affected of them all. He played the drum tracks to only one song on the 'Use Your Illusion' project. 'Civil War', the first single from 'Use Your Illusion II', was the only track from the two albums that featured the drumming of Adler. And, reportedly, that drum track was the straw that broke the camel's back. Slash found it near impossible to lay guitar parts over the track as it's timing was so inconsistent. Adler was out.
Since then Steven Adler hasn't done much of anything. He's guested live for old-school L.A. glam metal bands like L.A. Guns and has been doing the bikini contest judging circuit, among other 'special guest' appearances.
    Matt Sorum - Drums
Sorum was recruited from The Cult to replace sacked skin-pounder Steven Adler as the 'Use Your Illusion' sessions were in full swing.
Duff McKagan was once quoted as having said that Matt Sorum put Guns 'N' Roses back together during that period. His attitude and his drumming were in complete contrast to that of Adler's and the band drew new energy and inspiration from him.
Since leaving G 'N' R Matt has played with his Duff McKagan in The Neurotic Outsiders and rejoined The Cult.
He has also done a lot of work educating drummers through live clinics and guest article spots for a number of publications.
    Matt Sorum
Gilby Clarke Gilby Clarke - Guitar
Gilby Clarke was a well-known axeman in Los Angeles and well known to the G 'N' R crew before he was recruited to fill the vacant position left by Izzy Stradlin in 1991. Just weeks after he was recruited Clarke was off on one of the world's largest, and longest, tours; the 'Use Your Illusion' tour.
Axl Rose fired Clarke in 1995, but exactly what he was fired from is a mystery. Nothing was happening in the G 'N' R camp and Clarke had already started work on his Pawnshop Guitars solo release.
Clarke has gone on to release five albums as part of his 'Pawnshop Guitars' act and his most recent release was in 2002 as a solo artist. Gilby performed rhythm guitar duties for Slash's Snakepit's 1995 release 'It's Five 'O' Clock Somewhere'.
He has opened his own studio, "Red Rum Studios", where he's recorded and produced acts like L.A. Guns and Dad's Porno Mag.
Gilby Clarke also performed The Cult's 'Wildflower' for the recent Versailles records 'Cult Tribute album'.
    Dizzy Reed - Keyboards
Dizzy joined Guns 'N' Roses in 1990 as the band's sound, through Axl's writing contributions, required the use of more and more keyboards. He remains a member of Axl Rose's present G 'N' R project but has played with his old bandmates on many occasions as part of their solo projects. Duff McKagan, Gilby Clarke and Slash have all enlisted Reed's services.
    Dizzy Reed

So the big news for Gunners fans which has come to light in the last 24 hours is that there is another reunion of sorts taking place amongst old G 'N' R alumni.
Rumour and speculation has been around for a few months now about a band comprising Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. The line-up was rumoured to be considering vocalists such as Courtney Love and ex-Buckcherry frontman Josh Todd.
There has been some sort of confirmation recently when it surfaced that Slash had let his fans know that the outfit had tentatively been titled The Project. More confirmation came on January 4th, 2003 when it was revealed Todd Kearns of Age of Electric and Static In Stereo fame has been invited to audition for the lead vocals position in 'The Project'.
Slash has let more information slip to his fans, indicating that one-time Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach, Neurotica’s Kelly Shaefer and Days Of The New’s Trevor Meeks are currently the three front-runners for the position.

As always, nothing's set in stone as yet but it will be very interesting to see what comes of this latest revelation. It is widely regarded that all this is fair dinkum and that this is the closest to a Guns 'N' Roses reunion we have ever seen. And who knows, maybe, just maybe, Axl will one day take part with The Project. If that occurs, then the phrase "Nothing is impossible" would certainly be proven.

HOT ebay SIGHTINGS OF THE WEEK

There's not a whole lot on offer on ebay straight after the Christmas break, but the amount of gear available is growing daily as people clean out their closets during the holiday break.
Here's a "Hot" ebay sighting we think you should know about because we believe it's one to avoid.
Something is really sus about this one. The Duolian Dobro pictured in this auction is exactly the same (at least the pics are exactly the same) as one that sold at auction on SOLD.com.au on December 30th. The seller on SOLD was very vague in describing the instrument and only gave up some vital information after intense prodding. Even then they wouldn't give up the serial. On December 31st this auction appeared on ebay and the seller denies any link with the dobro on SOLD. Something just isn't right here and, justifiably; the auction has been stagnant for a few days now. The sell price on SOLD was around $1220, after a bidder who'd pushed the price to over $1500 pulled out. Why they pulled out I have no idea but that was a bold bid and a big drop down in price. At the time of publishing this issue the ebay price was $1276 with reserve not met. All a bit sus for this buyer. Not to mention that the item description has "Hula Blues" in it. May just be something to get people to check out the auction but this dobro is not even close to a "Hula Blues" model.
    Check it out for yourselves:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=621&item=934434330
There's a couple of lessons in this auction for all potential online auction buyers.
  • Ask the seller as many questions as you like until you are satisfied
  • Keep an eye on other auction sites just to see what's being doubled up on
  • Make sure the pictures of the instrument you are seeing are of the actual instrument being offered for sale
  • If an auction price stalls for a long time there's usually a pretty good reason
  • If it looks too good to be true then it probably is. (However, problems with the seller's description or title can make something that is valuable look less interesting to other potential buyers, so it may be a good buy but the seller doesn't really know what they have, and no other buyers have noticed it. Rare, but it does happen). Therefore, see the following:
  • Research, research, research

  • This beautiful 1962 Fender Stratocaster and 1962 White Fender Tremolux Amp has been up for auction all week and will end overnight Sunday, January 5th. The condition of this gear seems too good to be true but there has certainly been plenty of high bidding interest in the lot. This would seem to indicate the equipment is the real deal. Having hit US$12,600 at the time of publishing this issue the reserve has not been met. This guitar and amp is of such high quality one would suspect it could bring better money being sold by a reputable vintage store rather than in this auction format.
Drool over it by clicking below:

Befitting our new online range of Hohner harmonicas at bmusic.com.au is this lot which brings together musical memorabilia and musical instruments. Cop the price (U.S. dollars) of this unopened Beatles Hohner Harmonica: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=432&item=934573207

    FEATURED ARTIST - TONGUE

Tongue are a Brisbane quartet who mix equal parts electric and acoustic to form their ambitious and powerful rock set. Led by singer/songwriter Sabrina (not the "Teenage Witch") Tongue's repertoire ranges from beautiful string-laden acoustic ballads to hard-driven, riff-oriented rock. A touch of Suze DeMarchi is this girl.

Visit the Tongue Page at their very small scale independent label's page to get some Tongue-ing. If you like their stuff check them out at mp3.com.au where we hear they held the Number One spot in the Pop/Acoustic chart for quite some time. Give them your vote there as it probably counts as much there as anywhere for the guys right now.

Each week's Feature Artist is selected from the Band Links page, so get on and list your favourite group at the Band Link page and they could be the Feature Artist at bmusic.com.au.

After the Christmas break it seems a LOT of bands are suffering from line-up shuffles and, subsequently, there are a lot of new ads appearing. Most of the listings are for vocalists wanted. Get on over to Musicians Wanted to see all the new listings. Check back regularly over the next few weeks because there are bound to be a stack more ads in the very near future.

There are two simple sections at the FREE Musicians Wanted pages. 'Musicians Wanted by Bands' and 'Bands Wanted by Musicians'. If you fit one of these categories click HERE to see if there is a candidate to fit the bill. If not, then send us your new listing and we'll have it up inside a day. GEAR WANTED

  • MIDI Foot Controller. We need generic MIDI Foot Controllers like the old Yamaha MFC05 and the like. Only needs to be three button or higher and in pretty much any condition.

  • Second-hand saxes and clarinets. The new school year is fast approaching. We are looking for good quality, good condition, saxophones and clarinets for the approaching year to help out those parents who are a little dubious about their child's level of commitment to their chosen instrument and, subsequently, don't want to spend a bomb on what might turn out to be a fad. If you or your kids have taken up the horn but chucked it in, don't take it to Cashies. Brands like Yamaha, Yanigasawa, Selmer, Buescher etc. are always welcome at bmusic.

  • Fender Cases. A customer would STILL really like an original early seventies black tolex Fender bass case. Condition isn't too important, just as long as it's original.

  • Marshall JCM800's. That's right, we want 'em again. JCM800 2203 and 2204 models. Mainly after heads but will consider combos.

  • Fender Silverface Bassmans. A keen collector is after heads and cabs from the 60's and 70's. AB165 heads more particularly. Later AB135's may also be of interest. Of course, if you have an early Blackface you'd like to sell for the price of a Silverface then we'd be more than happy to entertain those too!

  • If there's something you've been trying to get your hands on, let us know and we will list it here for you. You never know.

If you spot something in the U.S. or Canada you're keen on let us know. We have contacts in those territories who, for a small fee, can act on your behalf in any transactions and make sure you get your stuff safe and sound.

    THE WEEK AHEAD IN MUSIC

  • Events
  • In 1956, Elvis Presley began his first recording session in Nashville. Among the songs recorded were "Heartbreak Hotel" and "I Was the One", which became Presley's first single for RCA Victor.

In 1958, "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis became the number-one song in the US. Later in the year, many radio stations began banning his records because of his marriage to his 13-year-old cousin.

In 1963, singer Gary Bonds sued Chubby Checker for $100,000, claiming that Checker's recording of "Dancin' Party" was plagarised from Bonds' "Quarter to Three." The suit was settled out of court.

In 1964, the Rolling Stones began their first tour on which they topped the bill. They opened at a London theatre, sharing the stage with the Ronettes and Marty Wilde.

In 1970, neighbors of Max Yasgur, on whose New York farm the Woodstock festival was held the previous year, sued him for US$35,000 property damage allegedly caused as a result of the Woodstock festival.

In 1974, KISS signed with Casablanca Records and went on to become one of the biggest selling artists of the decade.

In 1978, the Sex Pistols began their first and only US tour in Atlanta. The tour had been delayed because members of the British group had difficulty getting visas. Nine days later, the pioneer punk rockers announced they were splitting up.

In 1984, the album "Thriller" by Michael Jackson became the all-time best selling LP.

In 1986, a judge in Dallas, Texas denied David Crosby's request to enter a drug treatment program. He ordered the rock singer to remain in jail pending completion of his appeals on drug and firearms convictions. Crosby was sentenced to five years in prison in 1983.
You can bet Crosby wishes he'd made in screw up in this day and age. Then he could get a bunch of chances like Robert Downey Jr.

In 1987, Frankie Goes to Hollywood opened their final tour in Manchester, England. Their second LP sold only 60,000 copies compared with a million for the first one, which contained the hit single "Relax".

In 1988, the Columbia Broadcasting System sold CBS Records to the Sony Corporation of Japan. CBS Records began in 1887 as the American Graphophone Company, founded by two English inventors, one of whom was a cousin of Alexander Graham Bell. American Graphophone manufactured dictation machines. Its offspring, the Columbia Phonograph Company, did not begin making records until 1890. Over the years, Columbia Records was owned by an English businessman, a radio and refrigerator manufacturer, a button maker and finally a broadcaster, before being sold to Sony.
It's not known how much Sony paid for the CBS behemoth but you can bet it was a tidy sum!

In 1988, singer Frank Sinatra was US$1,000,000 for a single performance to help launch new Gold Coast resort "Sanctuary Cove". It was Sinatra's first performance in Australia in 14 years after he'd been banned by Australian unions in 1974 following incidents in which he called female reporters "hookers" and male reporters "drunks".
Sanctuary Cove developer Mike Gore, who had made his fortune in used car dealerships, made the bold move to show the standard of excellence Sanctuary Cove was to offer. Gore died in 1994 and Sanctuary Cove is now just another resort owned by an international consortium.

In 1992, Capitol Records in the US decided not to renew Anne Murray's contract. Bummer! She had been with the label for 22 years, recording 30 albums, many of them bestsellers.

In 1994, singer Rick James was sentenced in Los Angeles to five years and four months in prison for sexual assault on two women. But two weeks later, a plea deal was reached under which James avoided prison by entering a drug rehabilitation centre. The deal came after allegations that a prosecution investigator had provided heroin to a key witness at James's trial. The singer, best known for his 1981 hit "Super Freak," was convicted of holding one woman against her will and forcing another to have sex with his girlfriend during a six-day cocaine binge.
Not long after his release from prison James appeared in a civil suit on an episode of reality courtroom drama "Judge Judy".

In 1997, Chicago bluesman Son Seals was shot in the jaw. His wife was charged with battery.

In 1997, Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland checked himself into a drug treatment centre in California. It was his second drug rehab session within a year.

  • Births In 1923, Sam Phillips, owner of the legendary Sun Records in Memphis, was born in Florence, Alabama. Many music historians say Sun was where rock 'n' roll began. Certainly, Phillips was the first to record the black-influenced music of such young white singers as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins in 1954.
Phillips began by recording such black artists as Howlin' Wolf and Jackie Brenston, whose "Rocket '88" from 1951 is often cited as the first rock 'n' roll record. But Phillips had also dreamed of finding a white singer who could sing in a black style - and in 1954 he did. Elvis Presley recorded five hit singles for Sun before Phillips sold his contract to RCA in 1956 for $35,000.
Phillips sold Sun Records in 1969, but he had already assured his place in rock history. The original Sun Studio on Union Avenue in Memphis is now open as a tourist attraction. Much of the soundtrack for the 1989 Jerry Lee Lewis film biography "Great Balls of Fire" was recorded there.

In 1924, country musician Earl Scruggs.

In 1935, the "King of Rock 'n' Roll," Elvis Presley, was born in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Elvis Presley was found dead in his Graceland Mansion in Memphis on August 16th, 1977.

    In 1937, singer Shirley Bassey.

In 1941, folk singer Joan Baez was born in Staten Island, New York.

In 1942, saxophonist Clarence Clemmons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

In 1943, singer Jim Croce was born in Philadelphia. Croce's biggest hits, among them "Time in A Bottle" and "Bad Leroy Brown" became most popular after his death in a plane crash in 1973.

In 1944, Led Zeppelin guitarist and rock music legend, Jimmy Page, was born in London.
He established his reputation as a session musician in London in the early '60s, and is rumored to have played the guitar solo on the Kinks' recording of "You Really Got Me." Page later joined the Yardbirds as bass guitarist, taking over the lead guitar role when Jeff Beck left the group.
When the Yardbirds disbanded in 1968, Page formed Led Zeppelin with vocalist Robert Plant.

In 1945, rock drummer Aynsley Dunbar, who has played with Jefferson Starship, Journey, the Mothers of Invention and his own Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation.

In 1945, singin' stud (or is that one-time-stud) Rod Stewart.

In 1946, guitarist Syd Barrett, the founder of Pink Floyd, was born in Cambridge, England. See bmusic Newsletter No.21 for an in-depth look at the mystery behind the legendary Syd Barrett.

In 1946, The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger.

In 1947, David Bowie was born in London.

In 1947, Martin Turner, bass player for Wishbone Ash.

In 1948, singer Donald Fagen of Steely Dan.

In 1948, singer Kenny Loggins was born in Everett, Washington. He wrote the "House at Pooh Corner," a hit for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, before teaming with Jim Messina for several albums and the top-10 single "Your Mama Don't Dance" in the 1970's. The duo split in 1976, and Loggins did well on his own with such hit singles as "Footloose," the theme from the 1984 movie, and "Danger Zone" in 1986.

In 1949, George (Funky) Brown, drummer with Kool and the Gang.

In 1950, Chris Stein of Blondie was born.

In 1951, Peter (Biff) Byford of metal act Saxon.

In 1953, AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young.

In 1953, "All Fired Up" girl Pat Benatar.

In 1956, Mike Reno of the Canadian rock group Loverboy. That's right - Turn Me loose!

In 1958, folk-pop singer Shawn Colvin.

In 1958, Vicki Peterson of the Bangles.

In 1959, Crowded House drummer Paul Hester.

In 1963, Eric Erlandson, guitarist with Hole.

In 1964, Peter Gill of Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

In 1971, 2002 breakthrough artist Mary J. Blige.

In 1979, Chris (Daddy Mack) Smith of the very short-lived rap duo Kriss Kross.

  • Deaths In 1964, British blues singer and harmonica player Cyril Davies died of leukemia at age 32. In 1961, Davies and Alexis Korner founded Blues Incorporated, a band that employed such future stars as Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, and Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker of Cream. Davies left the band in late 1962 to form the Cyril Davies All-Stars, whose members included guitarist Jeff Beck, keyboardist Nicky Hopkins and singer Long John Baldry.

In 1976, Chester Burnett, who recorded dozens of classic blues songs for Chess Records as Howlin' Wolf, died in a Chicago hospital at the age of 65.
Wolf was discovered in Memphis by Ike Turner, then a talent scout for Sun Records. A pioneer in the use of the electric guitar in blues, Howlin' Wolf recorded such numbers as "Sittin' On Top of the World", "Smokestack Lightnin'" and "Spoonful". These songs were revived by several British rhythm-and-blues bands, among them The Yardbirds, in the early '60s.

In 1979, jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus died in Cuernevaca, Mexico, at the age of 56. Mingus, one of the great innovators in jazz, was a victim of the muscular ailment known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

In 1980, Carl White, one of the four members of the 1960's novelty group the Rivingtons, died in his Los Angeles home at age 48. The Rivingtons had hits in 1962 and '63 with "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word," which was copied almost note-for-note in 1964 by the Trashmen, who called it "Surfin' Bird" and took it into the top ten.

In 1987, Marion Hutton, the former lead vocalist for the Glenn Miller Orchestra, died of cancer in Kirkland, Washington. She was 67. Among the Miller standards on which she performed were "Chattanooga Choo-Choo", "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" and "Moonlight Serenade". Hutton, an alcoholic, retired from show business in 1954 when she married bandleader Vic Schoen. She spent the last two decades of her life helping other women alcoholics.

In 1991, Steve Clark, guitarist for the hard-rock band Def Leppard, was found dead in his London home at age 30. A coroner ruled Clark "was a very heavy drinker who seemingly had abused drugs and regrettably paid the price." Clark, lead singer Joe Elliott and bassist Rick Savage formed Def Leppard in January 1978. Their million-selling albums include "High 'n' Dry," "Pyromania" and "Hysteria." "Pyromania," released in 1983, sold seven million copies in the US alone. Def Leppard did not replace Clark for 15 months, finally settling on Vivian Campbell, a veteran of Whitesnake and other bands.

In 1993, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, one of the towering figures in modern jazz, died in Englewood, New Jersey, at age 75.
Gillespie, along with saxophonist Charlie (Bird) Parker, pianists Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, and drummer Max Roach, helped develop the bebop school of jazz during all-night jam sessions in New York during the 1940's. He later was instrumental in merging Latin rhythms with mainstream jazz.
Gillespie was also one of the most recognizable jazz figures - with his balloon cheeks, goatee and bent trumpet. Dizzy's story went that another musician tripped over his trumpet stand and bent the bell upward at a 45-degree angle. Gillespie liked the sound and used bent horns from then on.
Late in his life Dizzy Gillespie actually ran in the American Presidential election race and was almost elected Commander-in-Chief of the U.S.

In 1994, Harold Lucas, the founder of the Clovers, died in Washington, DC. He was about 70 years old. The Clovers were the most successful rhythm-and-blues group of the 1950s with such hits as "Don't You Know I Love You," "Fool, Fool, Fool" and "Love Potion No. 9." They also recorded the original versions of "Blue Velvet," later turned into a pop hit by Bobby Vinton, and "Devil or Angel," which was covered by Bobby Vee. Lucas toured with a Clovers group - he was the only original member - until two years before his death.

In 1995, composer Louis Gaste, who wrote the song that was plagiarised as the hit "Feelings", died at his Paris home at age 88. In 1956, Gaste co-wrote "Pour Toi (For You)" with his wife, singer-actress Line Renaud. The song didn't become popular at the time, but in 1975 Morris Albert adapted it as "Feelings". His recording made the US top-10, and the song became a staple of lounge singers all over the world. Gaste sued the Brazilian singer-composer over the song and won US$500,000 in damages in a US court in 1987.

In 1996, James Brown's wife, Adrienne Brown, collapsed and died at a Beverly Hills, California clinic, two days after undergoing lyposuction. She was 47. An autopsy showed she died from a combination of the illegal drug PCP and heart disease. The Browns' 10-year marriage was marked by her repeated charges - and his repeated denials - of physical abuse.
