Newsletter No.48
December 29th 2002 - January 4th 2003

Hope everybody had a wonderful Christmas and reveled in the spirit of the season. (Or in the beer, wine or soft drink of the season). With some big parties behind us here's hoping you kept something in the tank for the next big party this coming Tuesday evening. Have a great time New Year's Eve, and stay safe.
Some sad news since our last newsletter with the passing of Joe Strummer, former guitarist and singer for the breakthrough British band, The Clash. Strummer, aged 50, died of a heart attack at his home in Somerset, England after returning home from walking his dog. His death occurred on December 23rd, our time.
At the time of his death, Strummer was working on a third album with his band, the Mescaleros. He was also writing a song with Bono and Dave Stewart to serve as the centerpiece of the Mandela SOS fundraising concert, an AIDS awareness benefit set for February 2nd at the site of Nelson Mandela's former prison on Robben Island in South Africa.
Visit the Rolling Stone Magazine News Archives to read what Joe's contemporaries had to say following his passing.

  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - A BUNCH IN BRIEF

This week's Where Are They Now? features a number of artists covered in brief. This is to make up for the lack of new Where Are They Now? segments we've done over the past few weeks. There's a good cross-section of artists with some interesting happenings so enjoy the read!

David Coverdale DAVID COVERDALE - Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Coverdale Page

David Coverdale has another Whitesnake tour due to start on the 29th of January, 2003. In fact, rehearsals for the tour with his latest line-up start on January 2nd. The line-up for the tour, which will see Whitesnake joined by Dokken and the Scorpions, is the following:
Tommy Aldridge (Drums) - Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, Thin Lizzy
Doug Aldrich (Guitar/Vocals) - Dio, Lion, Burning Rain
Reb Beach (Guitar/Vocals) - Dokken, Alice Cooper, Winger
Timothy Drury (Keyboards/Vocals) - Eagles, Don Henley
Marco Mendoza (Bass/Vocals) - Ted Nugent, Thin Lizzy, Blue Murder
David Coverdale (Vocals) - Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Coverdale Page

COREY HART - Sunglasses at Night

Corey Hart was born on May 31, 1962 in Montreal, Quebec and is best known for the popular song "Sunglasses at Night" back in 1983. The song was a smash hit and was followed by another in 1985 called "Never Surrender." His fame also brought him roles in big movies. He was approached to star in "Back to the Future" but turned down the opportunity, and the lead role was eventually given to Michael J. Fox. Eventually his popularity began to fizzle out. His next couple of albums did not do so well. His latest album called "Jade" released in 1998 was not even released in the United States. He returned to Canada to promote the album.
Corey Hart also started working with other artists such as Celine Dion. He wrote some of the songs on her latest album called "A New Day Has Come." He also toured with her in Canada and the United States. Most recently Hart has been concentrating on promoting other artists such as Canadian singer Garou. He is also working on another album that should be released in 2003.
Hart now enjoys time with his wife and three girls. He lives in Nassau, Bahamas with his wife, Julie Masse, who is also a singer. They were married in June of 2000.
    Corey Hart

Rick Astley RICK ASTLEY - Never Gonna Give You Up

The clean cut 80's soul boy had his first great hit in July of 1987, "Never gonna give you up." He was discovered at the age of 19 by the songwriter Pete Waterman in 1985. His star rose in a very short time and, with the help of SAW, came out with other great hits like "Together Forever" and "When I Fall In Love".
His last hit was in 1991 called "Cry for Help", however since he had a fear for flying it stopped him from going abroad to do promotional work and from there on his career died out. Astley made approximately 10 million pounds when he was in the limelight and his early hits still rake in royalties. There have been several Greatest Hits CD's released throughout the world, remarkable considering his short-lived career. He now chooses to live away from all the stardom in Richmond, Surrey with his wife Lene, 38 and his nine year old daughter Emilie.
Rick Astley is now 35 years old and is supposedly recording his first album since 1993 but was dropped from a Polydor deal in November, 2002.

"Rick walked away right at the height. People look at other artists like Simply Red and say they were big, but he out-sold them two to one". - Pete Waterman
DEBBIE GIBSON - Teen Pop Queen

Debbie Gibson emerged in the late 1980’s and became one the biggest pop stars during the 80's teen-pop boom. Not only was she a talented singer, but an excellent song writer. The results of her talent were a string of hits and international fame before she even reached the age of twenty.
She got a recording contract before she was even out of high school and has sold millions of albums since her debut album "Out of The Blue in 1987".
Starting in the early 1990's, Debbie Gibson pursued an acting career and even appeared on Beverly Hills 90210 in 1991. She also appeared in lead roles in Broadway musicals Les Miserables and Grease. She released an album in 1993, Body In Soul, which featured a more adult-contemporary sound.
In 1995, she released "Think With Your Heart", an album featuring a 44-piece orchestra and also a cameo on an album by punk legends the Circle Jerks.
Currently, Debbie Gibson is very active in Broadway performances. Her recent performances include leading roles in Beauty and the Beast and Gypsy. She also continues to release occasional albums on her own label, Espiritu records.
    Debbie Gibson
Andy Timmons ANDY TIMMONS - Danger Danger

Session musician Andy Timmons first came to prominence as lead guitarist for Eighties metal band Danger Danger. After the demise of his springboard band Timmons has been plugging away at various projects from performing clinics around the world for his product endorsements, playing on cuts for artists such as Paula Abdul, Paul Stanley, Simon Phillips and Kip Winger. He has also held many guest spots on the legendary Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson G3 tours.
Timmons has also been long-time musical director/guitarist for Olivia Newton-John's U.S. tours.
He continues to hold star status in Japan and has released a number of solo projects in that territory. His latest offering, That Was Then, This Is Now, is slated for release in the U.S. in May, 2003 after Timmons was signed to Steve Vai's Favored Nations record label. His Live Bootleg CD/DVD is out now.

You can drop us an e-mail if you'd like us to track down some of stars of the past for you and feature them in Where Are They Now?

HOT ebay SIGHTINGS OF THE WEEK

A little more action online this week with Christmas behind us. Here are this week's hot sightings:

Check out http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10171&item=932466818 for a 1955 or 1956 Fender Bassman that's reached US$3000 and still has seven days to go at auction.

The following link is actually to a seller's full auction list. This guy is selling 20 guitars in 30 days to raise money for a down payment on a house he's buying in Florida. Gibson, Fender, Gretsch and Guild are among the items on offer, all with no reserve. This punter has had half a crack at a couple of his Les Pauls but I've been outbid pretty quick!

There's a great old bloke in his eighties who comes into our store here regularly just to sit and chat about this and that. He's a drummer from the old school and still uses the first pair of 7A sticks he ever bought way before WWII. Regularly he brings in a new batch of pics of his old drums for us to look at, and he has some real oddballs. However, among his collection he has some grand old Leedy drums. Vintage drum collecting has really started to hit it's straps lately and when people in the know find out this old timer has a stack of Leedy stuff they start groveling to him like beggars. But he just laughs it off; he will certainly never part with them if he can help it. He knows the bass drum pedals have appalling action, the skins are an almighty pain in the rear to change, tuning can be a nightmare. All that considered, he couldn't part with them for a new set because they are the only drums he knows how to play! Take a look at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10175&item=932487606 for an idea of what a pretty butchered set of Leedy drums can go for. (US$, don't forget). And this grand old man has stuff that is so rare (there is far less documentation in the vintage drum community than in the vintage guitar or violin community) that there hasn't even been a name put to it yet.

This Antique Violin of questionable heritage has an owner who is pretty sure of themselves when it comes to their asking price. Read the story and you too should wonder why this person hasn't taken the validation of the instrument's authenticity one step further, and wonder why they haven't offered up it up in a specialist auction for such things. Take a look:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=359&item=932305990

Here's a Gibson Les Paul Standard Plus that I've had a bid on myself for a bit of action early in the auction. If you check out the Bid History you might be able to spot the bmusic nick stepping in when the guitar was just US$36.00. Pushed him up to sit as high bidder until the Americans got out of bed again.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33040&item=933736632

No wonder guitar wrecking has become so popular. Check out this 1960 Gibson PAF Humbucker going for US$1400:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=22670&item=932000559

Here's an interesting bunch of auctions being held by the American Smithsonian Institute and cable television channel The History Channel. It's a celebrity signed guitars and memorabilia auction for a fund known as "Save Our Sounds". Click HERE to read more about the project. Bidding is, theoretically, only open to residents of the continental United States. But when has that ever mattered in such things. I had a successful bid on a Brooke Burke signed Epiphone Evolution but was outbid pretty quick.

KISS fans get your wallets out. This pair of Washburn Black Diamond and Millenium limited edition guitars is going for a shade over US$10,000.

    GEAR WANTED

  • Martin Guitars. A couple of customers are ready to take their next step. After thinking Maton was the bees knees these guys have had the opportunity to wrap their mitts around a couple of old Martins and they've been seduced. So now they need to satisfy the craving for an old Martin. From D18's up they'll look at anything.

  • MIDI Foot Controller. We need generic MIDI Foot Controllers like the old Yamaha MFC05 and the like. Only needs to be three button or higher and in pretty much any condition.

  • 70's Ibanez Guitars and Basses. Looking for a whole range of the knock-offs Ibanez were famous for in the seventies. Les Pauls, Jazz Boxes, Basses, whatever you have we'd like to know about it. Also keen to score some nice Destroyers and Icemen.

  • Second-hand saxes and clarinets. Looking for good quality, good condition, saxophones and clarinets for the approaching new school year. If you or your kids have taken up the horn but chucked it in don't take it to Cashies. Brands like Yamaha, Yanigasawa, Selmer, Buescher etc. are always welcome at bmusic.

  • Fender Cases. A customer would REALLY like an original early seventies black tolex Fender bass case. Condition isn't too important, just as long as it's original.

  • Marshall JCM800's. That's right, we want 'em again. JCM800 2203 and 2204 models. Mainly after heads but will consider combos.

  • Fender Silverface Bassmans. A keen collector is after heads and cabs from the 60's and 70's. AB165 heads more particularly. Later AB135's may also be of interest. Of course, if you have an early Blackface you'd like to sell for the price of a Silverface then we'd be more than happy to entertain those too!

  • If there's something you've been trying to get your hands on, let us know and we will list it here for you. You never know.

If you spot something in the U.S. or Canada you're keen on let us know. We have contacts in those territories who, for a small fee, can act on your behalf in any transactions and make sure you get your stuff safe and sound.

    THE WEEK AHEAD IN MUSIC

  • Events
  • In 1942, Frank Sinatra, backed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra, performed his first solo concert at the Paramount Theatre in New York.

In 1953, 20,000 people attended the funeral of country star Hank Williams in Montgomery, Alabama. Williams had died three days earlier at age 29 in the back seat of his limousine.

In 1961, the Beach Boys played their first concert under that name at the Richie Valens Memorial Centre in Long Beach, California.
The group was previously known under several names -- the Pendletones, Kenny and the Cadets or Carl and the Passions.

In 1967, guitarist and vocalist Dave Mason made the first of his two departures from the group Traffic. Mason disagreed with leader Steve Winwood over the direction the group should take, with Mason favoring a pop approach while Winwood leaned toward jazz. Mason returned briefly in 1968 to help record Traffic's second album but was gone again within months.

In 1969, Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, with Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums, made their debut at the Fillmore East in New York City. The Band of Gypsies was the successor to the guitarist's first group, the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

In 1970, Paul McCartney filed suit in London seeking the legal dissolution of the Beatles' partnership. The move came six months after the release of the "Let It Be" album.

In 1973, Kiss, whose flash-and-thrash stage shows would influence two decades of heavy metal bands, made their debut at the Academy of Music in New York. They shared the bill with Blue Oyster Cult, Iggy Pop and Teenage Lust.

In 1974, Mick Fleetwood telephoned Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham and invited them to join Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood became interested in the duo after producer Keith Olsen played him an album that Nicks and Buckingham had recorded at Olsen's studio. He was rescued three weeks later in a raid by 150 anti-terrorist troops and police on a house in north-eastern Spain. • Deaths In 1953, one of the most charismatic figures in country music, Hank Williams, died of a heart attack brought on by excessive drinking. He and his band, the Drifting Cowboys, had been booked to play in Canton, Ohio, and Williams hired a limousine to take him to the gig. Williams is said to have fallen asleep during the trip from Knoxville, Tennessee, and when the driver tried to wake him at Oak Hill, Virginia, the singer was dead.
But some researchers believe Williams was already dead when he was put in the Cadillac by two hotel workers on New Year's Eve. The controversy was fuelled by the hasty autopsy performed at a funeral home in Oak Hill.

Though he was an alcoholic for most of his working life, Williams nonetheless became the most influential figure in modern country music. A star on both the Louisiana Hayride and the Grand Ole Opry, he was fired from the Opry in 1952 because of his drinking. Many of his compositions, such as "Your Cheatin' Heart", "Jambalaya" and "Cold, Cold Heart", have been recorded by rock, folk and rhythm-and-blues acts. Hank Williams was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961.

In 1967, Paul Whiteman, the most popular bandleader of the pre-swing era, died in Doylestown, Pennsylvania at age 77. He had more than 30 number-one hits from 1920 to 1934, including "Whispering", "Hot Lips", "Three O'Clock in the Morning" and "Ol' Man River". Whiteman was billed as the "King of Jazz", but he specialized in sentimental songs and novelty tunes. However, his band did include, at various times, such sidemen as cornetist Bix Beiderbecke, trombonists Jack Teagarden and Tommy Dorsey and trumpeters Henry Busse and Red Nichols.
Singer Bing Crosby made his professional debut with Whiteman in 1926.

In 1976, ex-Beatles road manager Mal Evans was shot dead by police at the home of his girlfriend in Los Angeles. Police said Evans refused to surrender a shotgun he was holding.

In 1977, jazz pianist and composer Erroll Garner died at the age of 53. Garner was a self-taught musician who couldn't read music. But that didn't stop him from composing timeless music, such as the familiar "Misty".

In 1979, composer and lyricist Richard Rodgers died in New York City at the age of 77. Collaborating with Lorenz Hart and later with Oscar Hammerstein the Second, Rodgers wrote Broadway musicals, many of which were made into movies, for more than 55 years. Among his greatest successes were "The Sound of Music", "The King and I", "South Pacific", "Carousel" and "Oklahoma".

In 1980, folk singer and songwriter Tim Hardin died of a heroin overdose in Los Angeles at the age of 40. He composed such well-known songs as "Reason to Believe" and "If I Were a Carpenter", which provided a hit for both Bobby Darin and the duo of Johnny Cash and June Carter. Ironically, Hardin's only successful single came when he recorded Darin's "Simple Song of Freedom", which made the US top 50 in 1969.

In 1980, New Orleans-born rhythm-and-blues singer Larry Williams, despondent over his fading popularity, committed suicide. Williams began as a valet for singer Lloyd Price, before playing in Price's band. By 1956, he was recording on his own, and the following year had two million-sellers with the humorous novelty songs "Bony Moronie" and "Short, Fat Fannie." The Beatles were great admirers of Williams' music, and recorded several of his songs, including "Slow Down", "Bad Boy" and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy".

In 1985, singer Rick Nelson, his fiance and five members of his Stone Canyon band were killed when their private plane crashed near Dekalb in northeastern Texas. They were on their way to perform at a New Year's Eve concert in Dallas.
Nelson gained teen-idol status in the 1950s after appearing with his parents and brother David on U.S. television's "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet".

In 1986, Phil Lynott, former lead singer of the group Thin Lizzy, died in a London hospital of heart failure and pneumonia brought on by drug and alcohol abuse. He was 35. The Irish-born singer was being treated for an infection of the kidneys and liver.
Lynott is also recognised as a prolific poet.

In 1997, Randy California, guitarist for the 1960s rock band Spirit, drowned while swimming with his 12-year-old son off Molokai, Hawaii. He was 45. California was apparently caught in a riptide after pushing his son to shore.
Spirit did have a Top-25 single in 1968, "I Got a Line on You", but they were known primarily for their critically-acclaimed albums, which blended hard rock, blues, country, folk and jazz.
