Newsletter No.38
October 20th - October 26th 2002

The fact that this issue of the bmusic Newsletter made it out this week is a minor miracle. The past week was chaos to say the least. The pinnacle of the week was when a semi-trailer, laden with one of the biggest bmusic shipments for some months, en route from Melbourne caught fire due to an electrical fault and burned to the ground. So the panic was on to get as much stock replaced and resent as was humanly possible before week's end. Much of the stock was pre-ordered, most of which was required before the weekend. Friday comes around and still no replacement stock. Almost an entire day on the phone until, finally, three different carriers arrived with the majority of the stock within an hour of one another.
But the chaos was only beginning. Most of the stock was to be installed or for private delivery. All the guys were out and about madly doing their deliveries and installs in time to go and play their own shows later in the evening. It was all complete and everything had settled when the clutch cable snapped in this author's grand ol' panelvan as I was completing the last of the installs. The good news is, all stock is in the hands of its rightful owners, and all store stock is unpacked and in it's rightful place. As for the van, she'll be right - it's a V8, why change gears anyway?
Yet another bumper issue of the bmusic Newsletter this week. Where Are They Now? features a guy who has taken many weeks to track down, and one amazing story. The usual featured product, new lines, featured artist, and much more are also inside. Links in the Table of contents below will launch your browser, so you'll need to be online to view the newsletter. • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - MARK GILLESPIE

The subject of this week's Where Are They Now? may be unfamiliar to many of our younger readers, which is a shame as he produced some of the finest recordings in the short history of Australian popular music. The artists that have played with Mark Gillespie over the years reads like a "who's who" of Australian musicians. The most highly regarded and respected musicians have played and/or recorded with this quiet genius over the years. Combine those musicians with the brilliance of Gillespie's songwriting and performance and it's no small wonder his albums are regarded as classics amongst those who know Australian music. Thanks to Neil for requesting this week's Where Are They Now? Neil is a valued bmusic.com.au customer who could have found the answer to where Mark Gillespie is with a phone call to one of his many old friends in the Oz music industry, but I guess he'd rather see how well we could tell the story.
If you've never heard of Mark Gillespie, you owe it to yourself to hunt down an album of his and experience what contemporary musical genius is all about. Gillespie's story is remarkable, we hope you enjoy it.

Melbournites may best remember Mark Gillespie as the singer/songwriter/guitarist who enjoyed a cult following in the Victorian capital throughout the late 1970's. It was his emotive roots-rock style, incorporating soul, rhythm and blues, funk, and a dash of reggae that endeared him to fans of the Melbourne scene at the time.

Gillespie's first recordings appeared on a various artist's compilation called 'The Debutantes', released by the Oz label. The compilation featured two of his tracks, 'I'm A Kite (Won't You Be My Hurricane)' and 'The Joke's On You'. Around the same time Gillespie published a collection of prose and poetry through the small publishing company Outback Press.

In 1978 Mark Gillespie and the Victims released 'Savanorola', his first single. The Victims included Mick 'The Reverend' O'Connor on keyboards, Peter Reed on drums, and Bruno DeStanisio on bass.

Gillespie's big break was just around the corner. He signed to the Festival label and released the single 'Coming Back For More' in 1979. It was this release and his new label that scored Mark support slots for Tom Waits, Rodriguez and Maria Muldaur on their respective national tours of Australia. Gillespie and his touring band, Broderick Smith, Stephen Cooney, Clive Harrison, Trevor Courtney, Stewart Watson, and Pat and Gay L'Nane showed the rest of the nation the heart-felt performances Melbourne fans had been enjoying for the past few years.

The stage was set and Mark Gillespie, now signed to EMI, went into the studio with Joe Creighton, Mark Meyer, Ross Hannaford, Rex Bullen, Lisa Bade and a swag of other guest artists (some of whom went on to enjoy national stardom) to record his debut long player 'Only Human'. Four singles and countless performances to his expanding appreciative audience, Gillespie needed a break.

He traveled throughout Asia for a year or so before heading back to record the follow-up to 'Only Human'. In 1982 his second album 'Sweet Nothing' was released on the Glenn Wheatley's label through EMI. The album featured friends from his debut, Ross Hannaford, Mark Meyer and Lisa Bade, with the addition of saxophonist Andrew Thompson, bassist Tim Partridge, and Gary Lyon (not the ex-AFL player) and Nikki Nicholls on backing vocals.

The album produced three singles, 'Nothing Special', 'Traveller in the Night', and 'Night and Day'. On the Melbourne charts Gillespie's second album reached Number 9, but more importantly, it peaked at Number 32 on the national charts, the first time a Mark Gillespie release had featured in the national Top 40. Fans and critics alike lauded his releases and Gillespie was fast becoming recognised as Australia's premier songwriter. He followed up the success of 'Sweet Nothing' with his third album, a self-titled effort in 1983 that soon became more widely known as 'Ring of Truth' after the lead single. 'You' and 'Letting Go' were the other singles from the album that featured ex-Bee Gees and Groove drummer, Geoff Bridgeford and vocalist Renee Geyer.

Mark Gillespie, for whatever reason, had had enough. He returned to Asia where he set up an orphanage in Bangladesh, a gesture that was indicative of the heart and soul of Mark Gillespie. In the mean time Glenn Wheatley and EMI made the most of their signing when they released 'Best of Mark Gillespie (Small Mercies)' in 1985. It appeared Gillespie's contribution to Australian music was done when nothing was heard from him until 1992 when he returned to Australia to record and release 'Flame' in 1992 Gudinski's Mushroom label tied up with Festival, the label who had given Gillespie his first big break 13 years earlier. At this time he also released the CD single 'Long Time' and EP 'Don't Wait'. Old friends and musicians who'd long admired Gillespie's work gathered to record these comeback efforts. The artists involved included Joe Creighton and Ross Hannaford, along with ex-Mondo Rock keys man James Black, John Farnham band drummer Angus Burchill, ex-Aussie Crawl and Kevin Borich Express drummer John Watson, former Stephen Cummings Band guitarist Shane O'Mara, and Deborah Conway Band bassist Bill McDonald, among others.

But, so far, that's all she wrote as far as Mark Gillespie's contribution to Australian music is concerned. Since '92 Gillespie has had no further involvement. According to another Australian music legend, Broderick Smith, Mark is happy living with his wife north of Benalla in Victoria. Brod told us this week that Mark is "staying away from the scene and enjoys spending more time with farm animals than people".

Mark Gillespie's story truly is a humbling one for all us musicians. He seems to be a man who cares more about humanity, happiness, and music for music's sake than swimming through the sharks to "make it" in the business of music.

    UPDATE 10th JUNE 2008
A thousand thanks to Anne who dropped us a line to let us know Mark is now back in Bangladesh with his wife of more than 17 years using his architectural talents to rebuild cyclone damaged villages. She tells us he has not forgotten his music.

Drop us an e-mail if you'd like us to track down some of stars of the past for you and feature them in Where Are They Now?

HEADLINES FROM LAST WEEK'S MUSIC NEWS

KISS FANS TUNE IN TO ROVE LIVE
We are informed that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will appear on ROVE Live, Channel Ten, Monday, 7:30, in full make-up. We assume it's to promote KISS' anniversary gig in Melbourne in March, 2003 with the MSO.

    ARIA AWARDS
The Australian Recording Industry Association Awards were announced this past week with Kasey Chambers and Kylie Minogue sweeping the pool. (Ever noticed there are very few solo male artists getting major kudos after the ARIA's each year, surely Scott Cain was a chance this year!). You can check out the winners by visiting www.aria.com.au. I for one have never been able to work out who wins and why, or even why a recording industry nominates and then gives awards to itself.

AUSTRALIAN MUSOS PITCH IN FOR BALI BENEFIT
Sunday, October 20th will see a huge line-up of Australian acts doing their bit for the Bali benefit at Sydney's Domain from 11:30 AEST. The line-up includes John Farnham, Kasey Chambers, Iva Davies, Nikki Webster, Wendy Matthews, Killing Heidi, Jimmy Barnes, Mark Seymour, Bachelor Girl, Brian Cadd, Glen Shorrock, Billy Thorpe, Marcia Hines and Russell Morris. Each artist will be performing a tune befitting the occasion. Here's hoping that a live CD or DVD is released and the profits go to the wonderful Balinese locals who will, no doubt, suffer enormous economic hardship from the tragic events of last weekend. Russell Crowe and Kylie Minogue, who were unable to attend, have taped video messages for the crowd to be played at the concert.

CHIEFTANS DEREK BELL DIES AT AGE 67
Derek Bell, pianist for Ireland's legendary Chieftains, has died in the USA after recovering from minor surgery. 67 year old Bell was a member of the Irish group for 30 years. Bell had played on more than 30 Chieftains albums.
The news of his death came as a shock to band members who had just completed a US tour and had heard Bell was given the all clear by doctors to return home to Ireland. A statement from the band reads, "It is with deep sadness that The Chieftains announce the death of band member and much beloved friend."

    HERE COMES ANOTHER SOAPIE STAR
Rebecca Cartwright of 'Home and Away' fame releases her debut single, 'All Seats Taken', this coming week. Yawn! Can't wait to hear the production efforts on that one.

    silverchair DVD
In their wisdom, silverchair allowed the cameras to film the entire process of making their latest album 'Diorama'. The DVD entitled 'Across The Night' will be on shelves very soon.

BON JOVI'S BOUNCE DEBUTS IN THE U.S.
After being released in Australia for a few weeks now, Bon Jovi's eighth album has hit the shelves in the U.S. An extremely strong debut was not enough, however, to knock Elvis Presley's Best Of collection off of top spot on the U.S. charts. Bon Jovi's album came in second behind the Presley compilation which has, to date, sold close to a million copies in the U.S. alone.

    MARILYN MANSON THE FILM SCORER
Word is shock-rocker Marilyn Manson has been given the job of supplying a soundtrack to the upcoming 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' remake to begin filming in the U.S shortly.

    SOAD SINGER GVEN LABEL IMPRINT
For more than a year, System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian has been selling records by underground bands on his Web label, Serjical Strike, and now the organisation is going mainstream. System's label, Columbia Records, has granted Tankian an imprint and will release new Serjical Strike albums next year by three relatively unknown LA acts whom Tankian has "known for years" - Bad Acid Trip, Kittens for Christian and Slow Motion Reign.

Excellent condition BOSS FB-2 Flanger pedal. No box or instructions. Hardly used. Selling for a fraction of the new retail price.

Rockman 'Tom Scholz' X100 Headphone Amp - $150 incl. GST, $136 excl. GST for international buyers.
Click HERE to view in detail.
Primarily used for practice, this popular 80's gizmo was noisy as all get out but gave you that unique late 70's sound found on the Boston albums. Combining several switchable "amp" settings, this unit delivers a lot of modern sound. It packs a mighty punch for its size but the signal to noise ratio makes it useless for a live date. With a 1/4 inch output jack one is tempted to connect it to an amp but the real fun is strapping it on your hip, using phones and wailing away to your own "More Than A Feeling"! Clean I and II plus edge and all out distortion combined with effects combinations like chorus and echo, just echo or just chorus. Ahead of its time in functionality, the Rockman X-100 is, sadly, no longer in production.

See X-100 for a comprehensive write up of the x-100 plus some sound samples.

    THIS WEEK'S FEATURE ARTICLE

Have you ever tried to mic up an acoustic guitar? It's an artform, sadly one that's been neglected by a lot of studio engineers. "Just use a sample" is the cry from most young engineers/producers these days. This author's response will always be, "Why, can't you get the sound of my amp/guitar/bass/drums to your desk? No, well, you'll just have to read a few more books then won't you?"

Click HERE to read this invaluable lesson by Michael Laskow and be sure to print it out and take it with you next time you head down to your local two-bit studio. If your engineer says, "Why don't use just use a sample?" or "We can fix it in the mix" then drag out your Michael Laskow article and show 'em how it's done.

Our basement features the Print Music section, with a fair amount of space used for storage. The second floor and rear of the ground floor are used for our teaching studios and rehearsal spaces. Soon we will be utilising more of the basement for retail display, as well as the rear ground floor area. If that fills up, we'll need to extend for the poor ol' teachers.
We'll keep you posted on how things are going and, in the meantime, start checking out bmusic.com.au for those big and little Christmas pressies. You're sure to find something for the musician who has everything, the musician who has nothing, and all the musicians in between.
