Newsletter No.37
October 13th - October 19th 2002
Some great news this week for Australian music. Scott Cain, winner of the first ever solo Popstars TV show, was able to see
how well his debut album, 'Controlled Folly', fared on the Australian charts after the album's release the previous week.
After the album's unceremonious debut at position number 49 on the ARIA Australian Album chart it seems unlikely we'll be
hearing too much more from the skateboard-riding punk with his hat on sideways. And will Warner Bros. be interested in taking
part in the next Popstars series? For that matter, will any record label be interested? For the sake of this author's sanity
let's hope not!
Yet another bumper issue of the bmusic Newsletter this week. Where Are They Now? features another Australian artists. The usual
featured product, new lines, featured artist, and much more are also inside.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - GANGgajang
This week's Where Are They Now? was made much easier thanks to the great official site GANGgajang maintain at www.GANGgajang.com. The site is maintained by GANGgajang founding member Geoffrey
Stapleton, and it's clear to see when you visit that the band have played a major role in the development of the site and
in providing the excellent information and other resources therein. Thanks to www.GANGgajang.com for the following.
|
GANGgajang was formed in 1984 after several songwriting sessions for the ABC TV program 'Sweet & Sour'. Some of the songs
were used in the show but Mark "Cal" Callaghan from The Riptides and former members of The Angels, drummer Graham
"Buzz" Bidstrup and bassist Chris Bailey, together with Kayellen Bee and Marilyn Delaney, decided
a brand new band would best show off their new songs.
After adding former Aliens guitarist and keyboard player Geoffrey Stapleton and Adelaide born guitarist Robert
James, 'GANGgajang' became the self-titled debut album. With sales in excess of 120,000 copies, it spawned the hit
singles 'Gimme Some Lovin', 'House of Cards', 'Giver of Life', 'The Bigger They Are' and the now Australian commercial
radio staple 'Sounds of Then (This is Australia)'.
In 1987, GANGgajangs music was featured exclusively in the Quiksilver surf movie 'Mad Wax'. The film has now become a
cult wax head classic and has introduced the band to a worldwide audience. GANGgajang was named "World's Best Band" two
years in a row by the World Pro Surfers' Association.
|
A second album, 'gangAGAIN' in 1987, completed the first phase of the band the members took some time to pursue individual
projects. Over the next few years Cal released a solo album, Buzz played sessions, produced albums and movie soundtracks,
Chris worked with artists as diverse as Jimmy Barnes, Alannah Myles and Nathan Cavaleri, Geoff formed The Dukes with Sean
Kelly and Rob wrote a book, 'The Second Best Book of Disunderstandabilism' and recorded his songs with Wendy Matthews.
In 1991, the band reformed (without Kayellen and Marilyn, who had gone on to successful careers in the film industry), and
took to the road for one brief tour. The audience response was so overwhelming it encouraged the band to record its third
album, 'Lingo' which was released in 1994 on Rooart and chalked up another three hit singles, 'Hundreds of Languages', 'Talk
To Me', and 'Ordinary World'. Lingo is now available on BMG records.
In 1995, the first two albums were repackaged into 'The Essential GANGgajang', which has now sold over 30,000 copies on the
Shock label. The GANG also toured Brazil for the first time, playing to over 60,000 rapturous fans in ten concerts through
nine cities and in 1996 the Nine TV Network adopted 'Sounds of Then (This is Australia)' for its 1996 year promotion,
sparking a revived interest in the band's live dates around Australia.
The GANG continues to perform across Australia and beyond and in February 2001 they completed their third tour of Brazil.
When not performing or recording together as GANGgajang each member remains very busy.
Singer Mark Callaghan is General Manager of Shock Music Publishing, drummer Buzz Bidstrup has managed
Australian music legend Jimmy Little since the release of his 1999 ARIA award winning CD 'The Messenger' and also takes care
of the bulk of the GANGgajang management duties, while guitarist
Robert James released his first solo album 'Suzannah Suite' and is now recording a second in between touring
Australia in solo mode.
Keyboard player and resident artist Geoffrey Stapleton is now living in Adelaide and preparing his next exhibition
of paintings to be called 'Oceans and Deserts' while maintaining and developing
www.GANGgajang.com. Chris Bailey is working in a wide variety of music cultures in Sydney and has most recently
produced an album for singer/songwriter Dave Debs. He has also managed and/or produced the likes of Jimmy Barnes, The
Stetsons (featuring Jeff “Skunk” Baxter), Smoky Dawson, Nathan Cavaleri, and Diana AhNaid. Chris also plays in Jimmy
Little's live band.
GANGgajang has played together for over sixteen years and is touring Australia’s Eastern states through November.

A new single, 'Nomadsland', recorded and mixed by the 2000 ARIA producer of the year Steve James, is now available through
Shock Records. The CD also features an orchestral version of 'Nomadsland' written by guitarist Robert James. The orchestral
version was used as the soundtrack for the Perth Skyshow spectacular on January 26th 2001.

HEADLINES FROM LAST WEEK'S MUSIC NEWS
CREED CAN DATES
Creed have had to reschedule more dates across America due to singer Scott Stapp suffering from laryngitis. Swollen vocal
cords have caused the illness, the third such setback for Creed. In 1999 and 2000 the band also had to can shows due to Stapp suffering
from laryngitis. And in April last year the band had to trash 20 shows after Stapp strained his back and neck in a motor
vehicle accident. So how many sickies does Stapp have left?
LIMP BIZKIT CON
Fred Durst has been talking up the next Limp Bizkit album, due in the US Autumn. Bass and drums are recorded with Durst
playing guitar. He has had help from picker like Korn's Brian Welch and former Helmet axeman Page Hamilton. There have been
a few other contributors who Durst won't name. It's not known whether these players will appear on the album or not.
So what happened to the Guitar Center search for the next Limp Bizkit guitarist?
What a con! Durst now has the exclusive rights to thousands of hours of original material and brushes the "search" off by
saying they couldn't find anyone. Yeah, right.
WES BORLAND LOOKING FOR A SINGER
In a story that, on the surface, appears to draw remarkable parallels with the Limp Bizkit search for a guitarist, Wes Borland's
new band 'Eat The Day' are searching for a singer. However, 'Eat The Day' won't be criss-crossing the US on a Guitar Center
sponsored scam. The band asks that hopeful applicants submit demos by emailing files to demos@eattheday.com or sending CDs
and tapes to:
Eat the Day
P.O. Box #103
1954 Hillhurst Ave.
Los Feliz, CA 90027
Borland's post said that they're looking for someone dynamic who can sing, not just scream - however, the ability to do so,
"bloody murder" style, is encouraged. What they're not looking for is a "nü-metallish type of vibe" or rap, and advise
anyone believing to be a master MC not to bother.
"[Rap demos] will immediately be thrown into the garbage," Borland warns, "except for the jewel case, which we will keep."
Although Eat the Day are based in Los Angeles, locals aren't the only ones encouraged to apply. If they think you may have
what it takes, they'll make arrangements for you to come to them.
KISS 'FAREWELL' TOUR
Kiss' endless farewell tour will still be limping around the world next year when it comes to Melbourne for a world exclusive
event. Word is that in March, 2003, Kiss will perform in Melbourne with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the
Kiss 30th Anniversary.
SORDID DETAILS ARISE IN LAWSUIT
Naturi Naughton, a former member of American R & B group 3LW, has served a lawsuit against her former band. The lawsuit,
filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey, alleges that Naughton was under the impression that she was
urged to develop a romantic relationship with a member of hip-hop quintet the St. Lunatics in order to secure 3LW's place
on a tour with them. When she informed her former bandmates that nothing had happened between her and a St. Lunatics member
which whom she met, she was harshly criticized for not "getting her mack game up" and failing to "close the deal." 3LW never
did tour with St. Lunatics.
WES BORLAND GEAR ON ebay
Former Limp Bizkit guitarist, Wes Borland, has said that he will be auctioning two of his amps on ebay.com soon. Borland
will be offering up two Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier rigs that were a part of his Limp Bizkit touring kit. The amps will be
offered under the heading "Wes Borland owned Dual Rectifier".
"I think it's kind of cheesy to sell it under my own name," he noted, "but that's really the only way to explain the
amount of wear and tear, not to mention all the pyro dust inside them."
JASON NEWSTEAD JOINS VOIVOD
Former Metallica bassist Jason Newstead has certainly been busier than his old bandmates recently. Newstead announced this
week he'll be joining metal legends Voivod, his second band since leaving Metallica.
NIRVANA COMPILATION TRACK LIST ANNOUNCED
Nirvana's first ever compilation album simply called 'Nirvana' will feature 14 tracks including the previously unreleased 'You Know You're Right'.
The widely bootlegged You Know You're Right is said to be one of the last songs Kurt Cobain wrote before his death in 1994. The song was recorded by Nirvana in January 1994. The release is the first time an unreleased Nirvana studio recording has come out since Cobain's suicide.

1990 Fender Stratocaster - USA Lefty - $1499 incl. GST negotiable, $1362 excl. GST for international buyers.
Click HERE to view in detail.
Particularly striking custom flame top. By custom we mean custom. Original owner, a cabinetmaker, decided to laminate this
USA Fender Strat with flame maple. Clearly the guy was a perfectionist and, as such, has done a beautiful job. But, at the end
of the day, this is a re-fin in every sense of the term. Sperzel tuners, not a mark on the guitar. Complete with OHSC. Mint
(albeit customised) condition. This guitar has barely been played.
Rockman 'Tom Scholz' X100 Headphone Amp - $150 incl. GST, $136 excl. GST for international buyers.
Click HERE to view in detail.
Primarily used for practice, this popular 80's gizmo was noisy as all get out but gave you that unique late 70's sound
found on the Boston albums. Combining several switchable "amp" settings, this unit delivers a lot of modern sound. It packs
a mighty punch for its size but the signal to noise ratio makes it useless for a live date. With a 1/4 inch output jack one
is tempted to connect it to an amp but the real fun is strapping it on your hip, using phones and wailing away to your own
"More Than A Feeling"! Clean I and II plus edge and all out distortion combined with effects combinations like chorus and
echo, just echo or just chorus. Ahead of its time in functionality, the Rockman X-100 is, sadly, no longer in production.
See X-100 for a comprehensive write up of the
x-100 plus some sound samples.

FEATURED ARTIST - KIASMA
A young band sent us their details this week to be listed on bmusic's Band Links page. Their spiel sounded
interesting so we gave the guys a closer look. What we found were four young guys from the Gold Coast with a belly full of
attitude and the music to match. Great stuff, particularly great considering the age of these fellas. They've had some good support
slots in the past and are just starting to go out on their own. Kiasma have already released a three-track demo (available from
their website) and are currently recording their debut EP which will be released very soon.

GEAR WANTED
Four Tracks. Quality four track recorders from makers like Tascam, Fostex and Yamaha are always in demand. Let
us know if you have a spare four, six or eight track lying around.
NOS Tubes and Speakers. Any NOS tubes or speakers are of interest to us. If you have something drop us a line and
tell us about it. It may be just the bit we need.
Pre-65 Fender Strat Pickups. So one of our customers has two of these pickups, one too few! He's desperate to find
a third at a fair but "non-ebay" price.
Fender Cases. A customer would REALLY like an original early seventies black tolex Fender bass case. Condition isn't
too important, just as long as it's original.
Marshall JCM800's. That's right, we want 'em again. JCM800 2203 and 2204 models. Mainly after heads but will consider
combos.
SG Knock-offs. Have a bloke looking for any ol' SG copy for the body and neck only. If you have a stinker lying
around with a straight neck let us know.
Second-hand saxes. Looking for good quality, good condition, saxophones. Brands like Yamaha, Yanigasawa,
Selmer, Buescher etc. would be great.
Fender Combos. Smaller Fender combos sought by a fastidious buyer. Vibrolux or Duals et al, but early. Silver or Black faces.
No Custom Shop reissues though.
Fender Silverface Bassmans. A keen collector is after heads and cabs from the 60's and 70's. AB165 heads more
particularly. Later AB135's may also be of interest. Of course, if you have an early Blackface you'd like to sell for the
price of a Silverface then we'd be more than happy to entertain those too!
If there's something you've been trying to get your hands on, let us know and we will list it here for you. You never know.
If you spot something in the U.S. or Canada you're keen on let us know. We have contacts in those territories who, for a small
fee, can act on your behalf in any transactions and make sure you get your stuff safe and sound.

bmusic AND THE FUTURE - HOW BIG CAN IT GET?
We at bmusic.com.au are fast approaching three-thousand products online! It would take you days to browse all the products
we have so to save time, simply use the Search page.
As with any search engine, it helps the process to use specific key words or to broaden your search by trying a number of
key words one at a time that you think may fit the description of the item you are looking for. If you still can't find
what you're after simple mail us and we'll see if we can't help.
We spend hours every day answering enquiries about all sorts of products, whether they are online or not. If we receive an
enquiry for something that isn't listed online, we try to get it up on the web within a day. This way we know we are listing
products that consumers are interested in. The more e-mails we get - the more stuff gets listed, aside from the usual 50 to 100
new listings we add each and every week. By this time next year we will have well over 5000 products online at bmusic.com.au,
and even then we won't be happy.
Our stock instore also continues to grow, to the point where we are having trouble moving around down here. And we haven't
even landed the bulk of our Christmas stock yet! Our store features three levels. Our main ground floor level is where the
bulk of our retail stock is displayed. Our basement features the Print Music section, with a fair amount of space used for
storage. The second floor and rear of the ground floor are used for our teaching studios and rehearsal spaces. Soon we will
