Newsletter No.28
August 11th - August 17th 2002
This week's issue is the short one to give your Inbox a rest. As mentioned last week, this author's off to bask in the
testosterone of the WWE Global Warning Wrestling event at Colonial Stadium in Melbourne. There is no "Week Ahead In Music
History" this week due to time constraints. My apologies to the fans of this section. There are a couple of important
historical deaths that took place in the coming week, however, and they should be noted. The first is the death of 'The King'. Elvis
Presley died from an overdose that resulted in coronary arrhythmia on the 16th of August 1977, 15 days after his 42nd
birthday. The other notable passing was that of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a giant of world music. Pearl Jam fans will remember
him as the Sri Lankan guy who sang alongside Eddie Vedder on the song 'Long Road'.
There is some semblance of an issue left this week, including Where Are They Now?, our featured artist, new lines,
headlines, feature article, and more. See you when I get back (that's provided the WWE don't sign me up for a wrestling career
of course).

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - MILLI VANILLI
The following story of the rise and fall of Milli Vanilli was taken, in part, from the horse's mouth as it were. Fabrice
Morvan's official website www.fabricemorvan.com. The
detail has been edited with information from other sources so as to give our readers an unbiased look at the story that
few people have forgotten.
|
Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus were two homeless kids who met on the streets of Munich in the late 1980s. They decided to
join forces as a dance act and became a sensation throughout the city's club scene. But when record producer Frank Farian
signed them with a promise to do their first single and instead contractually forced them into creating a lip-synching act
for some prerecorded dance tunes, what seemed like the culmination of a dream became the start of an international
nightmare.
Starting in 1988, Farian released singles like "Girl You Know It's True" and "Blame It On the Rain," then sent Milli
Vanilli out to tour. The tours sold out all over the world, and the group sold some 30 million singles and 14 million
albums. None of them knew how long success would last -- but they all knew it was on the line when Milli Vanilli won a
1990 Grammy Award as the odds-on favorite for Best New Artist.
Rob and Fabrice threatened to announce the truth about their performances to the
public themselves if Frank Farian did not allow them the opportunity to bolster their careers against the inevitable
backlash by singing on their next album. Instead, Farian decided to cut his losses and held a press conference to put his
own spin on the group's creation -- and destruction. So Rob and Fabrice were publicly vilified, while Farian and Arista --
Milli Vanilli's label, which falsely claimed ignorance of the whole matter -- got off scot-free. The scandal ended with the
pair being forced to return their Grammy. All this only eleven months after they had taken the award.
The duo tried a comeback--billing themselves as Rob and Fab--releasing an album in 1993 and even going on the talk-show
circuit to prove they could really sing. But nobody listened. As no labels were interested in distributing the release, it
was destined to fail.
|
Fabrice decided to turn away from a simple pop star career, and to focus on creating more adventurous and personal music.
But for Rob, things were far more tragic: Depression led him to drug abuse, to several resulting arrests, and to a failed
suicide attempt. Bailed out of jail by none other than Frank Farian, Rob returned to Germany to work on a new Farian
project. Soon after, on April 5, 1998, Rob Pilatus died of an accidental combination of drugs and alcohol. He was 33.
When news of the death reached Morvan he was quoted as saying, "I'm feeling tremendous pain and sorrow upon hearing the
news of my friend and brother Rob. He will always be a part of me. We grew up struggling, then succeeding. The only thing
we wanted was a chance to sing and perform. Milli Vanilli was not a disgrace," Fabrice continued, "The only disgrace is
how Rob died -- all alone, internally destroyed from the rapid rise then sudden fall." Fabrice went on to show just how
the pair had felt about their careers with the following quote, " Where were the ones that pushed us to the top who made
the millions?"
|
|
|
With the recent airing of the high rating episode featuring Milli Vanilli on US music channel VH1's "Behind The Music", the
public relations tide has
turned in favor of Fabrice Morvan. He explains, "I was able to clear the record and tell people, I was not alone. There were a
lot of people behind the scenes orchestrating the whole charade…all of whom left Rob (Pilatus) and me to fry when the
truth came out."
His latest release, "Love Revolution" has been well accepted by old and new fans alike. Fabrice’s "turns" are on the
upswing as he gains valuable support and kudos from the entertainment industry and its critics. The Los Angeles Times
boasted that one performance, working only with his guitarist, "offered 35 minutes of evidence that he can actually sing…"
The review added that his silky voice was "…well-suited to his upbeat, soul-influenced dance tunes and ballads."
Having made the rounds at recent music industry conventions and award shows, Fabrice has laid the groundwork for one of
the biggest comebacks in music history. Regular speaking engagements and hosting his own show on Los Angeles’ #1 rated
radio station KIIS-FM have also kept Fabrice Morvan at the forefront of the public consciousness in the US.
The international pop star that first learned English when he came to America as an adult now uses the language to wax
philosophically. "My perspective on life continues to grow and that inspires me. I’ve had extreme fame, fast and furious,
and with no exaggeration, lost it over night. I’ve seen both spectrums, and I can talk about that. I feel pain; I know
what pain is about, and what trouble is about, so I can relate to people from all walks of life. I look at things that are
most important to me: love, friendship and how to overcome one’s personal struggles. I talk about how things can change in
life and how we often take for granted what we have."
|
Seems a little ironic. Lip-synching is such an accepted part of the popular music industry these days, yet if Fabrice Morvan
were to regain international success in that field he'd probably have to have the voice of Andrea Bocelli. Not only that,
he'd have to deliver it whilst playing guitar like Jimi Hendrix and dancing like Rudolf Nureyev.
If you'd like us to track down some of stars of the past for you and feature them in
Where Are They Now? drop us an e-mail at bmusic
and we'll see what we can do.

FEATURED PRODUCT - ALL NEW GUITAR ARMOR
|
We told you last issue about an exciting new product that has landed at bmusic. Guitar Armor has been creating quite a buzz
since we released it last week, both here in Australia where bmusic is the sole supplier, and in the US where major
chains like Mars Music have been picking it up. Tacoma guitars are also shipping all their guitars in the US with a
complimentary Guitar Armor pack. Since the latest NAMM show last month, our friends in the US have gone troppo over Guitar
Armor.
Guitar Armor is one of
those 'must haves' for guitarists and bassists looking to protect their instruments from the hazards of regular use. It's
now easy to protect your investment, and it won't cost you a fortune.
Guitar Armor is a clear urethane pick guard that goes on virtually invisible and will protect the guitar surface from
scrapes and scratches and keep it looking as good as the day you brought it home.
Guitar Armor is virtually invisible after application and best of all, Guitar Armor is great for keeping new finishes
looking good for years to come.
Although Guitar Armor when applied
appears to be permanent after application, it can easily be removed and will not leave a residue when peeled off the
surface of the guitar should you decide to remove it later from your instrument.

VINTAGE AND ITEMS OF INTEREST AVAILABLE AT bmusic

anything in particular mail Shane to make sure you are first in line when we
land what you are after.
1990 Fender Stratocaster - USA Lefty - $1499 incl. GST, $1362 excl. GST for international buyers.
Pics online soon.
Particularly striking custom flame top. By custom we mean custom. Original owner, a cabinetmaker, decided to laminate this
USA Fender Strat with flame maple. Clearly the guy was a perfectionist and, as such, has done a beautiful job. But, at the end
of the day, this is a re-fin in every sense of the term. Sperzel tuners, not a mark on the guitar. Complete with OHSC. Mint
(albeit customised) condition. This guitar has barely been played.
Yamaha FG450SAL Acoustic - Lefty - $549 incl. GST, $499 excl. GST for international buyers.
Pics online soon.
Dreadnaught style, solid spruce top, round soundhole, black pickguard, bound body, abalone rosette, ovankol back/sides,
nato neck, 14/20 fret bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl snowflake inlay, rosewood bridge with black pearl dot pins,
bound peghead with rosewood veneer, 3 per side chrome tuners. Natural finish. This guitar is AS NEW. Complete with original
hang tag, warranty card, spare bridge and truss rod key. Owner played 'House Of The Rising Sun' three times on this guitar
and never touched it again. The model was discontinued in 1994 so it's at least 8 years old. Last known retail was around
the $1000 mark.
Rockman 'Tom Scholz' X100 Headphone Amp - $159 incl. GST, $144 excl. GST for international buyers.
Pics online soon.
Primarily used for practice, this popular 80's gizmo was noisy as all get out but gave you that unique late 70's sound
found on the Boston albums. Combining several switchable "amp" settings, this unit delivers a lot of modern sound. It packs
a mighty punch for its size but the signal to noise ratio makes it useless for a live date. With a 1/4 inch output jack one
is tempted to connect it to an amp but the real fun is strapping it on your hip, using phones and wailing away to your own
"More Than A Feeling"! Clean I and II plus edge and all out distortion combined with effects combinations like chorus and
echo, just echo or just chorus. Ahead of its time in functionality, the Rockman X-100 is, sadly, no longer in production.
See X-100 for a comprehensive write up of the
x-100 plus some sound samples.

X-100 Reviews to see how much people who own these things love 'em.
Washburn J6 Hollow Body Electric - $1200 incl. GST, $1090 excl. GST for international buyers.
Price negotiable.
Click HERE to view in detail.
Gorgeous Washburn hollow body in as new condition. Maple body with a spruce top. Original owner has fitted the Bigsby and
a more bitey bridge humbucker. This guitar is now known as the J6 Montgomery in the Washburn range. The new model
features the newer Washburn headstock, different bridge and a different tailpiece. (Not that this one has the original
anyway). Comes complete with humongous case. Scratchplate included but not fitted in photo.
Kentucky KM-180S Mandolin - $550 incl. GST, $500 excl. GST for international buyers.
Price negotiable.
Click HERE to view in detail.
Beautiful condition Kentucky KM-180S Mandolin. Solid spruce top. Solid mahogany neck. Gloss sunburst finish. Complete with
pickup and case. Very slight nick on soundboard. Sweet playing mando.
Fender 1974 Jazz Bass - $1600 incl. GST, $1454 excl. GST for international buyers.
Click HERE to view in detail.
1974 (pot dated) 3-bolt U.S. Jazz Bass. Blonde, OHSC, original F logo bridge cover, inspection tag and owner's manual.
Crack in back of neck. There is no movement of the truss rod insert and one side of the visible line appears to actually
be a scrape rather than a crack. The guitar has taken a knock sometime long ago. No movement visible in neck either.
Besides this problem, the bass is cherry ripe! Classic axe.
According to modern literature (most notably Gruhn's Guide and the Blue Book) the Fender Jazz Bass wasn't fitted with
3-bolts until 1975. This guitar is pot-dated to 1974 (serial indicates '73 but is less accurate than pot-dating).
This bass is heading in for pro repair next week so if you'd like to get a hold of it at this price let us know. After the
repair (with documentation to support the strength of the repair) the price will go up significantly.
1996/1997 G & L Legacy Special - $1300 incl. GST, $1181 excl. GST for international buyers.
Click HERE to view in detail.
Beautiful 1996/1997 G & L Legacy Special Strat style guitar. Near mint condition. 2 G&L Dual Blade and 1 G&L Power Blade humbucking pickups.
Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard. G&L Dual Fulcrum vibrato. Schaller locking tuners. Alder body with Cherryburst finish.
Includes non-original hard case.

FEATURED ARTIST - DUNGEON
From humble beginnings over 13 years ago in the Australian outback town of Broken Hill, Dungeon has risen to become
Australia's premier Melodic Power Metal band. Formed by singer / guitarist 'Lord' Tim, Dungeon has gained international
recognition with releases such as 'Demolition' (1996, TDK-Core Records) which achieved over 5,000 sales in Japan within
the first six weeks of its release and more recently 'Resurrection' (1999, Warhead Records / MGM) which is currently in
its 3rd pressing and available worldwide.
Both releases received rave reviews in both Australian and international magazines and webzines, with Dungeon being voted
as one of the top 10 most promising new bands of 1997 in Japan's BURRN! Magazine. Strong reviews such as these coupled
with the band's energetic and professional live shows have gained Dungeon a substantial and loyal following.
Now based in Sydney, Dungeon continues to grow on its success with appearances at many large festivals such as Australia's
largest metal event, Metal For The Brain, which they appeared for the last four years, headlining the main stage in 2001,
co-headlining the Screaming Symphony and Metal Warriors metalfests in Melbourne three times and co-headlining the Wintersun
festival in Canberra. Dungeon has also supported Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen and Power Metal heavyweights,
Edguy and Nevermore on their latest Australian tours.
Dungeon recently recorded the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the 'Resurrection' album, entitled 'A Rise To Power' which
is slated for release on August 29, 2002, on the Metal Warriors label and a national tour has begun in support of the
album.
