Newsletter No.245
November 20th - November 26th 2006

Trawling the internet one does have a habit of getting lost in trivial facts if one stumbles across them. Here's a few I thought might be worth sharing, and possibly leading you on a Google path of time wasting for the next little while!

Indian singer Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam, S.P.B. to his mates, holds the Guinness Record for recording the most songs, over 39,000 of them in 40-odd years! He has performed these in five languages, once recording 21 songs in Kannada in 12 hours, 19 songs in Tamil in a day, and 16 in Hindi in a day.

Fiona Apple's 1999 release holds the record for the longest album title, brace yourself:
"When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight And He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand And Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right" Former Anthrax and Nuclear Assualt bassist, Dan Lilker's band, Brutal Truth, hold the record for the shortest music video of all time, 2:18 seconds of rapid succession still images followed by an explosion.

Last year Kurt Cobain's estate's earnings overtook that of The King, Elvis Presley, by nearly AUD$10 million, propelling him into top spot in the dead celebrities earning list. Much of this was due to Courtney Love selling a one-quarter stake in his back catalogue. Elvis had topped the list for the past four years after the "A Little Less Conversation" remix renewed interest and sparked a whole new slew of merchandising and releases.

Liberace, who himself received a scholarship to the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, set up the Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts in 1976, awarding it's first scholarships in 1980. Liberace oversaw such scholarships until his death seventeen years later. The Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts has awarded more than US$5 million in scholarship grants to more than 2200 students at over 110 colleges and universities.

  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - BILLY OCEAN

Leslie Charles was born in Trinidad in January, 1950 and moved to the UK with his parents at age eight. As a teenager he started performing around the London club circuit under many non de plumes, his first recording being 1971's "Nashville Rain" under the name of Les Charles. Another Les Charles single followed before releasing "On The Run" as Scorched Earth in 1974. Adopting the moniker of Billy Ocean he released Who's Little Girl Are You in 1975 before scoring a hit in 1976 with the single "Love Really Hurts Without You" which went to Number Two in the UK and Number 22 in the U.S. Other UK Top Twenty singles lifted from his self-titled debut were "L.O.D. (Love On Delivery)" and "Stop me (If You've Heard It All Before)".

However Ocean's next album wasn't as successful. 1980's "City Limits" spawned three singles, "American Hearts", "Are You Ready" and "Stay The Night", none of which cracked the Top 40 in his home territory. The latter two singles, penned by Ocean were actually later recorded by Latoya Jackson. A scheduled fourth single from the album was shelved by Ocean's label after the lacklustre response to the preceding three but the canned release, "Who's Gonna Rock You", was covered the following year by The Nolans and reached the UK Top 20.

CBS had bought out Ocean's label GTO by this time and shifted their focus to other artists in the stable around the time Billy's third album, "Nights Feel Like Getting Down", was released. In the UK the album floundered but conversely earnt him newfound respect in the US. He was awarded with the Best R & B Newcomer crown on the back of the release which sold quite well in the US, as did the lead title track single.

Still CBS left him to his own devices for the fourth album, 1982's "Inner Feelings", and the album again failed to deliver commercially in Europe and the UK and, without record company support he wasn't fully able to capitalise on his recent US successes. With that album finalising his contractual obligations with CBS and one child and a newborn with his wife Judy Bayne, Ocean and his friend and manager Laurie Jay went looking for a new deal.

The newly formed Jive Records label picked up Billy and it wasn't long before he delivered for them. His first single was originally called "European Queen" but label boss Clive Calder requested the title and lyric be changed to "Caribbean Queen" to reflect it's flavour. Ocean obliged, but the song actually ended up being released under three different names and with three different lyric sets for specific markets. The three incarnations were, the original "European Queen", "Caribbean Queen" and "African Queen".

Released in 1984 "Caribbean Queen" sold in excess of one million units and earnt Ocean a Grammy nomination in 1975. The resultant album, "Suddenly", featured the singles "Loverboy", a cover of The Beatles "Long And Winding Road", "Mystery Lady", and the title track. He set about promoting the album in the US with his first tour there, a tour which culminated with his performance of "Loverboy" and "Caribbean Queen" at the Philadelphia leg of the 1985 Live Aid concert.

The biggest success for Ocean was about to come. With a bloke who would later become Shania Twain's husband, John "Mutt" Lange, in the producer and co-writer's chair Ocean had a hit about to break. Lange was notable as the guru producer for such acts as Def Leppard and AC/DC (and later Shania Twain), amongst others, and showed his versatility when he produced Ocean's sixth album "Love Zone". The album opener and lead single, "When The Going Gets Tough", was selected for the Michael Douglas film hit "Jewel Of The Nile" and it was in no small part thanks to the soundtrack that "When The Going Gets Tough" spent more than a month at the top of charts the world over in early 1996. "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" was another successful single lifted from the album.

After touring North America and Japan Ocean would up his world tour in his adopted home country before heading into the studio to record his seventh album, again with Lange and two other co-producers from the previous production team successful with "Love Zone". His wife gave birth to another daughter for the couple before the lead single from the forthcoming new album was released. "Get Outta My Dreams (And In To My Car)" was another worldwide smash single for Ocean and the album from which it was lifted, "Tear Down These Walls", sold well in all territories.

A Greatest Hits packages was released by Jive in 1989 which included two new songs co-written with Lange, "Licence To Chill" and "I Sleep Much Better In Someone Else's Bed" which featured the then "Fresh Prince" Will Smith. A three year hiatus ensued and it's at this point that Ocean's movements become a little shrouded in mystery. As far as we know Ocean spent time battling alcohol and drug problems and even spent some time in jail. Exactly what transpired is unclear and probably best left that way.

In 1983, following his conversion to the Rastafarian religion of his place of birth, he returned with short dreadlocks replacing his trim executive 'fro and a new album, "Time To Move On", which featured modern production from some of the emerging R 'n' B producers of the time such as R. Kelly (when he was the producer guy, not the man we've seen more recently) and Timmy Allen and others. Critically these were canned as somewhat thin and formulaic but Ocean's own performances are commended. "Pressure" and "Pick Up the Pieces" were singles lifted from the release. Both singles, along with the album, didn't chart well. "Time To Move On" is Billy Ocean's last studio album to date.

A slew of Greatest Hits packages have been released throughout the world in the time since Ocean last recorded new, original output, some packaged as "Greatest Hits", others as "Love Songs of Billy Ocean" type of deals. Returning to the calypso instrument taught to him as a child by his father, the steel drum, Billy has played around the world with London's popular Ebony Steel Orchestra and in 2001 performed as Billy Ocean at the South African Freedom Day at London's Trafalgar Square, held to commemorate the seventh anniversary of free elections in South Africa.

In 2002 Billy Ocean was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music by the University of Westminster for contributions to the music industry, the same University his eldest daughter Cherie studied for her bachelor in Commercial music. He has also been inducted into the Caribbean Music Hall Of Fame.

A new compilation package was released in 2003 by Jive and featured two new recordings by Billy, covers of "Baby Can I Hold You?" by Tracy Chapman and "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley.

His daughter Cherie signed a recording contract with Jive in 2004 which to date has resulted in a single, "No 1" released in August 2004. To celebrate the single release, Billy and family dined at a restaurant in London's Saville Row, the very place a young Les Charles started some 30 years before. Nothing is known of Cherie releasing any more material since then unfortunately. Another Billy Ocean compilation was released later that year by Jive.

Ocean reportedly divides his time between Trinidad and his English home in Berkshire and enjoys family life and gardening.

FEATURED GUITAR - OLA FRENNING (SOILWORK) CAPARISON ANGELUS CUSTOM

For the next few weeks to months from time to time we will be featuring some of the guitars that are either part of the bmusic vault or have passed through our doors. Not your usual classics necessarily, although from time to time we'll feature some of those too, but what we consider "modern collectables" and curios. A lot of the guitars, as is the case with this first cab off the rank, are Japanese modern day examples. And this, the latest addition to our collection, has the distinction of being owned by one of the guitar company's endorsee, a member of the new breed of metal guitarists. Soilwork's Ola Frenning owned this custom version of the Caparison Angelus. Caparison only does customised versions of it's guitars for the endorsees, so it's generally very easy to know if it's an artist owned Caparison in question. This guitar was brought in from Sweden where a few Caparison endorsees hail from and a lot of the finest examples ultimately end up once they're passed on by the artist's themselves. Ola owns a couple of mat black versions of this guitar which are used live, this example is the only gloss version we're led to believe and was used to record some of the solos on their last release "Stabbing The Drama", released in March, 2005. This information comes from the guy who purchased the guitar from Ola in January, 2005. Ola's band, Soilwork, have their official site at soilwork.org.

So, until the next feature guitar, enjoy!

    FEATURED ARTIST - SECTOR 7G

Sector 7G formed in early 2003 in South Australia when a revelation was realised that most cover bands in Loxton in South Australia, and even elsewhere, were very rooted in one genre alone: 70s rock. The need to spread metal to the masses was felt by four local boys: Ben Petch, Tristan Kemp, Jason Hargreaves and Nick Hansen. Starting out playing only cover songs from bands such as Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue, they realised they weren't alone, when gig after gig they were continually filling the local establishments.

After a while, the groundswell of support became very impressive, and a platform for acceptance of original material had been layed. One of their larger gigs was playing support for Jimmy Barnes at a local fundraiser, where they debuted some original material to what can be described as a very enthusiastic response, but limited crowd numbers betrayed the true feel. New drummer, Jesse King, became skinsman for Sector 7G. With modern technology allowing much improved home recordings than ever before, they decided to self-finance their first demo, which in the end turned out professional enough to release as a seven track EP. This has been met with much excitement and praise. So with a freshly recorded EP and more original material than ever, Sector 7G continued to play gigs including the inaugural Hand Picked music festival: playing on the same bill as Snap To Zero, Shihad and Grinspoon. They thundered through an all-original set (with one cover tune thrown in) to a much larger, more eager crowd (3,000 people), who rabidly displayed their appreciation for their brand of metal.

Singer/guitarist Ben Petch used the time between another drummer change to record a demo CD of his original songs, many of them being potential Sector 7G material. September 2005 saw the highly-anticipated return of original drummer Nick Hansen to the ranks of the band. The might and fury of Nick brought back a fresh vigour to the band, and they were soon firing on all cylinders, better than ever before. The band has never been tighter or more productive.

Powerful new material is being churned out, ready to be unleashed upon the masses. With several other big gigs under their belts 2006 and big plans for 2007, it's never been a more exciting time to be in the Riverland metal band with the funny Simpsons inspired name.

Click www.myspace.com/sector7gmetal to check out Sector 7G's myspace to listen to and learn more about the boys from Loxton, SA.

    GEAR WANTED

  • Guitar promo catalogues:
A good friend of ours here at bmusic is after any old catalogues from days gone by. At the moment he's particularly keen to get a hold of any Washburn catalogues from the late '70's. Those that feature the Washburn Wing Series of basses and guitars would be of particular interest.

  • Second-hand saxes, clarinets and flutes. We are looking for good quality, good condition, saxophones, clarinets and flutes to help out those parents who are a little dubious about their child's level of commitment to their chosen instrument and, subsequently, don't want to spend a bomb on what might turn out to be a fad. If you or your kids have taken up the horn but chucked it in, don't take it to Cashies. Brands like Yamaha, Yanigasawa, Selmer, Buescher etc. are always welcome at bmusic.

  • Marshall JCM800's. That's right, we STILL want 'em. JCM800 2203 and 2204 models.

  • If there's something you've been trying to get your hands on, let us know and we will list it here for you. You never know.

If you spot something in the U.S. or Canada you're keen on let us know. We have contacts in those territories who, for a small fee, can act on your behalf in any transactions and make sure you get your stuff safe and sound.
