An awful lot of names get repeated over and over on these awards, let's hope it comes out with some sort of cred at the end of it. With the charts split now between ARIAs and Brazin they have to prove their continued relevance in terms of sales statistics and the like, what a lot of these awards are based around.

ARIA seems to be concentrating it's efforts somewhat on education lately, which is excellent. For instance, if you were ever in any doubt about how copyright in Australia with regards to music works, from the poxy mobile phone "true tones" to the lifespan of a piece of protected music visit the new Music Industry Privacy Investigations website recently set up and being promoted from ARIA.com.au. It's an industry initiative and, as much as I'm not a fan of a lot of the goings on in said industry, I'm happy to see something like this set up. Read about the offences it's tackled on behalf of the recording industry which, ultimately, does include the musicians.

Even if you're not interested in supporting the industry, have a poke around the MIPI site, you might be surprised and some of the things you see there. For instance, a report from a couple of years ago identified that of under-25s less than half knew that file sharing and burning of CDs was illegal. That translates into a half a generation of consumers unaware of the impact their actions are having, and it has had serious repercussions.

Adelaideans keen for a jam not only have the opportunity to do just that at the Eureka Tavern in Salisbury as part of their Thursday night Jam Night but throughout November and December the Tavern will be giving away weekly prizes in the lead up to the finale of the comp on December 14th where ultimate first, second and third places will be awarded. Visit eurekatavern.com.au for more details!

  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - ADAM & THE ANTS

At the height of the short-lived, volatile and dominant genre of punk in the late Seventies Adam Ant (aka Stuart Goddard)left art school outfit Bazooka Joe (the band who gave the Sex Pistols their first support gig) to start his own punk group, The B-Sides. He meandered through several line-up changes and a name change to Adam & The Ants but, despite having Jordan (aka Pamela Rooke), a Sex Pistols confidante, as manager and the sometimes assistance of the then mighty Malcolm McLaren, Adam & The Ants didn't actually manage to impress his group on the big time record company execs who were signing his peers en masse until punk was coming to a close at the end of Seventies. Just before this time they had minor label deals with Decca and then independent Do It. Adam & The Ants line-up and management disintegrated as their last Do It single "Car Trouble/Kick" came out and he had to embark on a supporting UK tour. One of those to leave was guitarist Matthew Ashman, recruited by McLaren to join his new Bow Wow Wow project. He did this with what would become the Adam & The Ants line-up. Adam Ant on vocals and guitar, Marco Pirroni (former Models and Siouxsie and the Banshees member) on the same, ex-Roxy Music bassist Gary Tibbs (who replaced Kevin Mooney just as things were breaking), drummer Merrick (aka Chris Hughes), and the unique addition of a second drummer Terry Lee Miall.

Virgin and CBS took note of Adam & The Ants during this tour and they signed with the latter in mid-1980, releasing their first single with them, "Kings of the Wild Frontier/Press Darling", almost immediately, outselling all previous Ants releases. The next single, "Dog eat Dog/You're So Physical", hit the UK Top 5 following an appearance on Top Of The Pops and the related album, "Kings of the Wild Frontier", made the Top 3. This was the second long player from the group but the first major and certainly the first with a solidified line-up. Their third CBS single, "Antmusic/Fall In", hit the Number Two spot on the UK singles chart, denied Number One by no less than John Lennon's "Imagine". By 1981 it managed, however, to snare top spot, the album climbing further to Number Two on that chart. All the Do It recordings had also been re-released and were topping the independent charts for the small label.

Adam & The Ants were dominating at home and abroad and their "Prince Charming" album, featuring singles "Stand and Deliver" and "Prince Charming", topped the charts as the band toured with great success behind it on the UK "Prince Charming Revue" tour. But it was over just as quickly as it had begun, the band disbanding in 1982 when Adam Ant, citing the band's "lack of enthusiasm", left the group and took Pirroni with him to embark on a solo career.

The individual members of Adam & The Ants have accomplished a great many things since the bust up in 1982, far too much to concisely include here. If you're interested in knowing their movements over the past two decades in detail you can check out www.adam-ant.net/ants.html for a plethora of information.

    ADAM ANT

Adam's solo career was very successful for the first couple of years, his first effort, "Friend or Foe" (from which the hugely successful single "Goody Two Shoes" was lifted), enjoying excellent results in the UK and the US where MTV was adopting Adam Ant as one of their poster boys. He went on to work with Phil Collins in the production chair on two tracks, including the title track, on his next album "Strip". That track was banned by the BBC in the UK for content. On both sides of the Atlantic things were OK, but not as peachy as on his solo debut. His next, 1984's "Vive Le Rock", was less successful again although he did perform the title track for that release on the massive Live Aid show in the UK in 1984.

He left music behind and went on to act on television, film and the stage in the UK, Canada and the US. From time to time he'd re-emerge, sometimes with former bandmates, for publicity duties behind Greatest Hits and reissue packages, sometimes also performing their biggest tracks for the occasions. In 2001 he hit the UK headlines when his marriage broke down and he was interviewed at length about this and depression that had dogged him, amongst other things.

Last month his autobiography, "Stand and Deliver", was released and he has spent the past little while promoting the release with media and book signings and the like. From all accounts it's an excellent read. I expect it would be too, knowing that the story behind Adam Ant reaches much further back than "Prince Charming", into the roots of the revolution that was the UK punk scene and forward through more than two decades of living in the shadow of Adam Ant, the guy who sang those big hits.

    MARCO PIRRONI

Marco worked as co-writer and musical director with Adam on his solo stuff following Adam & The Ants, ultimately penning the 10 Top 20 hits Adam had at this time. He then spent many years as collaborator/co-writer and musician for Sinead O'Connor and running his own small record label. He currently plays in The Wolfmen who have a new single, "Kama Sutra", out on Monday in the UK. The Wolfmen features bassist and vocalist Chris Constantinou, Adam Ant's solo period bassist. Marco also oversees most all Adam & The Ants back catalogue releases.

    GARY TIBBS

Tibbs formed Merrick and Tibbs with fellow Ant Chris Hughes and released one album, "Call of the Wild". He played bass for Kirsty MacColl and on Corey Hart's debut "First Offence" and is currently bassist for UK new wave outfit The Fixx who are still going having toured the US for the past five months or so with more dates to come there and in Canada throughout November and December.

    MERRICK (Chris Hughes)

Merrick did the Merrick & Tibbs project as mentioned above then went on to play for Tears For Fears. It was during this time with Tears for Fears that Chris got a taste for being on the other side of the recording console. He's been a producer ever since, also slipping into the drummer's throne from time to time. He has produced Paul McCartney, Ric Ocasek, Robert Plant, Howard Jones, Enya, Lloyd Cole and many, many more. He also did the remastering work on the latest Adam & The Ants reissues that featured Do It and CBS records, "Dirk Wears White Sox", "Kings of the Wild Frontier" and "Prince Charming" as "digitally remastered" and with bonus material in the form of previously unreleased demo and writing tape songs. Marco Pirroni oversaw this release. Chris has done similar work for other earlier Ants releases as well as Tears For Fears remasters as well as playing on some TFF bonus tracks for such releases late last decade.

Hughes released a long-time coming CD entitled "Shift" in 1994 which was a series of compositions by a drummer of the 70s, Steve Reich. It's still available at Hughes' official website www.chughes.co.uk/. More bio information and Hughes' thoughts on the role of the producer in the present day can also be found at his site.

    TERRY LEE MIALL

Miall has made some appearances at the annual "Ant Convention" held in London, but his time has been spent the past many years as a Warner Bros. record executive.

    Footnote:
The guitarist who left Adam in the early days to go with Malcolm McLaren to Bow Wow Wow, Matthew Ashman, passed away in 1998 as a result of complications from diabetes. He was 35.

    THIS WEEK'S MUSIC QUOTE

"Music is a universal language. Where speech fails, then music begins. It is the natural medium for the expression of our emotions - the art that expresses in tones our feelings which are too strong and deep to be expressed in words."

FEATURED ARTIST - THE DEVIL ROCK FOUR

Well who is the Melbourne band with the cool name, The Devilrock Four? They aren't exactly new at this, they've all been playing in bands since their teens and are known among other bands. And now in their twenties are doing it like it's the first time - energy, enthusiasm and none of that teen angst crap.
The Devilrock Four have a slightly different way of doing things; they just play simple 'check your brain at the door' style rock, and don't give a shit what anyone thinks. Even if nobody came The Devilrock Four would still put on one hell of a rock show, but people do come - and come back. In Fact entire rock bands - well known and unknown - come to see how another band abuses the rock sound. It's not a competition, it's bands trying to be the best rock band they can.
Their first studio EP, "Livin' This Low", is out now and garnering the band some very strong attention. On the back of this release they scored gigs in every Aussie state or territory excepting WA and the NT in just a few short months. Earlier this month they supported Dallas Crane for their tour of Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne and in November and December they will be on the bill for one of the most anticipated east coast tours for an Australian act, Airbourne. They're the young bucks from Melbourne who signed a squillion dollar deal and have just returned from LA recording their debut.
Check out the official web site of The Devil Rock Four for more info on the band, some piccies, mp3s, and a few laughs to boot. Of course the obligatory myspace page is also required viewing at www.myspace.com/thedevilrockfour

Each week's Feature Artist is selected from the Band Links page, so get on and list your favourite group at the Band Link page and they could be the Feature Artist at bmusic.com.au.

    GEAR WANTED

  • Guitar promo catalogues:
A good friend of ours here at bmusic is after any old catalogues from days gone by. At the moment he's particularly keen to get a hold of any Washburn catalogues from the late '70's. Those that feature the Washburn Wing Series of basses and guitars would be of particular interest.

  • Second-hand saxes, clarinets and flutes. We are looking for good quality, good condition, saxophones, clarinets and flutes to help out those parents who are a little dubious about their child's level of commitment to their chosen instrument and, subsequently, don't want to spend a bomb on what might turn out to be a fad. If you or your kids have taken up the horn but chucked it in, don't take it to Cashies. Brands like Yamaha, Yanigasawa, Selmer, Buescher etc. are always welcome at bmusic.

  • Marshall JCM800's. That's right, we STILL want 'em. JCM800 2203 and 2204 models.

  • If there's something you've been trying to get your hands on, let us know and we will list it here for you. You never know.

If you spot something in the U.S. or Canada you're keen on let us know. We have contacts in those territories who, for a small fee, can act on your behalf in any transactions and make sure you get your stuff safe and sound.
