Newsletter No.236
September 18th - September 24th 2006

So the results are in for RockStar:Supernova, winner being one Lukas Rossi from Canada who was widely tipped to take it out for some time, whether by virtue of his abilities or by engineering of the show as it aired. Australian Toby Rand missed out, but I would have thought, in the long run, maybe it's better for him, and most certainly Australian music, that he didn't get the job. It appears his own Melbourne band will now secure themselves a Stateside deal as a result of his involvement. Curiously, Toby and Lukas were the two bottom vote getters of the last three with Dilana being number one vote getter, according to how they presented the nominees for elimination. However, Tommy Lee, when announcing Lukas as the ultimate winner, said they had to "listen to the fans" and go with who got the most votes. A curious twist on arithmetic as I thought I knew it????

Things don't appear as they are going all Supernova's way though. Quite a bit of backlash online regarding the winner, the way the show ran, and the perceived lack of future for the group with the members having their own projects which are, without doubt, their priorities. In particular Tommy Lee with Motley Crue. Crue have been playing shows even in between the tapings of RockStar and are on tour until at least the end of November. With Supernova set to debut it's live act, ad no doubt some recorded material, on New Years Eve it's hard to imagine Tommy Lee putting in too much effort into this "side project" of sorts. Jason Newstead has stated many times that his current band, Voivod, is his number one priority and will remain so despite Supernova. Quite frankly, Jason Newstead, at least on what aired, seemed completely disinterested in the goings on of the show for the past month or more.

And the troubles don't end there. A Southern California rock band that has called itself Supernova since 1991 and recorded three albums under the name sued CBS, the show's participants and Mark Burnett Productions in June claiming unfair competition and trademark infringement. United States District Court Judge John A. Houston issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday barring that band from performing, recording or selling music under the Supernova name pending the outcome of the lawsuit. Attorney John Mizhir, Jr., who represents the original Supernova, characterized the judge's order as "a major victory." As if you wouldn't have considered the name Supernova as already having been taken, MANY times over. Indeed, one of our subscribers' vocal coach is part of a group that owns the trademark to Supernova as a band name in Australia.

Much has also been discussed about respected producer and musician Butch Walker's involvement in the show also. He appeared as the producer for the band on the first show but hasn't been spotted once since. He didn't want to be involved in the TV side of things and was apparently only doing the production stuff as a favour to Tommy Lee. Whether he stays involved or at what level, if any, he has or will have remains to be seen. Word is some prominent managers have turned down the offer of representing the group also!

Taking all that into consideration and reviewing the series, it does seem as though a lot of it was cobbled together purely to make a series. That has nothing to do with the contenders, they did what they had to do with what could be considered a sometimes completely irrelevant repertoire of material, and a repertoire that was very much recycled from last year's RockStar:INXS. But the producers are doing it all again next year, at least we'll get to see the house band again!

So congratulations to Toby for getting so far, for growing as a performer throughout the series, and remaining staunchly Aussie! We look forward to seeing what he and his band Juke Kartel are able to do as a result of the show. The single he performed on the show certainly got them going over there in the land of the Stars & Stripes.

Now I can concentrate my viewing on Supergroup on VH1 with Sebastian Bach, Evan Seinfeld, Ted Nugent, Jason Bonham and Scott Ian. Should be good for a laugh judging by the way Sebastian Bach's headed and the group of very different musicians in the group.

This week's Where Are They Now? is another "by request", and another modern day Australian act that came and went with some pretty memorable tunes in between.

  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - SKUNKHOUR

The following brief bio which says about all there is to say about Skunkhour for the purposes of this feature was taken from the mega-database of band bios and general info, http://www.allmusic.com/. Not mentioned in the AllMusic bio is the complete line-up of Skunkhour, that being:

    Vocalist Aya Larkin 1991-2001
    Vocalist/rapper Del Larkin 1991-1996
    Guitarist Warwick Scott 1991-2001
    Keyboardist Paul Searles 1991-2001
    Bassist Dean Sutherland 1991-2001
    Drummer Michael Sutherland 1991-2001

Named after the poem "The Skunkhour" by Robert Lowell, the Australian band Skunkhour successfully mixed their eclectic influences, which stretched from ska, funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop to reggae.

Forming in 1991, they quickly became a popular act around Sydney and, after supporting U.K. act Galliano on their 1993 Australian tour, issued their debut self-titled album. The EP, Booty Full, followed in September, and keyboardist Paul Searles joined the lineup. In 1994, Skunkhour released two acclaimed EPs: State (May) and McSkunk (October).

The band's second album, Feed (April 1995), produced two EPs, Up to Our Necks In It (April) and Sunstone (July). The band then signed an international deal with U.K. label Acid Jazz, which issued the Feed album in Europe. Rapper Del Larkin left the band in February 1996 and percussionist Chris Simms joined for live shows as Skunkhour toured overseas during 1996.

Their third album, Chin Chin, was released in July 1997 and hit number 34 on the national Australian charts. It produced the singles "Breathing Through my Eyes" (May), "Weightlessness" (August), and "Morning Rolls" (November). "Weightlessness" was voted number 93 on the youth radio network Triple J's 1997 Hottest 100 list.

Another single, "Tomorrow's Too Soon for Goodbye," was released in August 1998, followed by "Stadium," which appeared on the original soundtrack to of the Australian film Two Hands in June 1999. Their next single, "Home" (October 1999), also charted on the 1999 Triple J Hottest 100 list at number 82.

Their final album, The Go, was critically well received, but the band felt their record company, Universal Music Australia, wasn't giving them the support they deserved and Skunkhour decided to break up in November 2001. ~ Brendan Swift, All Music Guide

These days Warwick Scott, Dean Sutherland and Michael Sutherland all play together in the group Modern Life. Their bio taken from their myspace page.

Modern Life is Warwick Scott (guitar) Michael Sutherland (drums) and Dean Sutherland (bass), known best as the rhythm section of Australias iconic Skunkhour, together with Matt Knight (guitar) and Charlie Smith (vocals/keyboards).

The band formed in 2003 when Michael, Dean & Warwick meet singer songwriter Charlie and begun recording at Maxitone in Sydney with infamous English producer Steve James. The following year saw the creation of a distinctive breed of driving off kilter pop/rock. By mid 2004 Modern Life, with enough material to gig, were joined by guitarist Matt completing the line up.

Charlies humorous commentary on urban life and soulful vocal style with Dean and Michaels punk and dub grooves are at the heart of Modern Life. Warwick and Matt complete this picture with their combination of quirky, off-beat rhythm guitar and tasteful counter-melodies.

Modern Life first played in Sydney late 2004, and maintains their reputation as one of Sydney best live acts. Modern Life played at Midem 2005 as a part of an independent Australian Music showcase in France.

With Difrnt music Modern Life released a self-titled ep in November of 2005. The titled track Modern Life got significant national air play, including Nova in Sydney and Melbourne, F.B.I, Sea fm., JJJ, ZZZ, RRR and was featured on former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones radio show in L.A. The E.P is still available on i Tunes.

Modern Life is no one hit wonder, the track smile today reveals a band with more than one hit up their sleeve. smile today works its way into your consciousness with compulsive ease.

Paul Searles has kept himself busy as a session keyboardist and live performer, playing and recording with newcomers Virna Sanzone and Inga Liljestrom as well as Jenny Morris with whom he's recorded live and studio albums and recorded. She is currently on tour supporting her 2006 effort on which Paul played, "Clear Blue In Stormy Skies" which was part of the "Liberation Blue Acoustic Series". The support is an acoustic style tour also featuring Dragon, Michael Spiby (ex-Badloves) and the Choirboys. It's not known whether Paul is part of that tour. He is now a full-time member of Sydney guitarist/singer/songwriter Cassie Egan's band after originally stepping in only as a session player to record her debut last year.

Aya Larkin had two songs released in Australia in 2004. Collaborating with Melbourne duo Our House as lead vocalist on their remake of Tears for Fear's "Shout", and having his original song "Just" on the compilation "Bondi Calling 2". The latter being Aya's first release as a solo artist. He is now based in Los Angeles where he's been working on a solo album and performs in acoustic mode. He has his owne site at www.ayalarkin.com.

Del Larkin is a member (of sorts in that he's the DJ that performs alongside and with them) the Byron Funk Collective which also includes other Bondi musicians, Sol R and Affro Dizzi Act Crew and DJ Shuffle from Byron's Mighty Highness Records. The group have a residency every Friday at the Buddha Bar at the Arts Factory Backpackers Lodge in Byron Bay. No doubt Del's enjoying the lifestyle of Byron Bay and we believe he also does a fair bit of his own DJ work in and around the area.

Drop us an e-mail if you'd like us to track down some of stars of the past for you and feature them in Where Are They Now? or if you have anything to add or correct from one of our features.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation about the ins and outs of PA systems and their components, from the stuff being taught to school kids all the way up to the ideas of some seasoned pros we know. A long time ago we posted an excellent Public Address System tutorial by a guy called Scott that has become one of our most frequently visited resource pages here at bmusic.com.au.

FEATURED ARTIST - WILLIAM SHATNA'S PANTS

A cohesion of generations, and the musical differences between them........

Made up of rockers in their 30s, 20s and their teens, William ShatNa's Pants fills the gaps. After meeting in 2003, Jamie and Luke began working on a number of songs together, bashing strings in a tidy room with no apparent acoustic benefit. With only a few common influences, and starting with acoustic guitars, they weaved uncertain melodies together, trying to find some winning combination. Without a drummer, and no guitar stacks to amplify the sounds, the results ended up more like an acoustic duet (duh!) than a ballsy 'screw you!' rock sound.

Rehearsals sooned begged for a beat and Beat (Magazine) it was that presented WSP with a 17 year old human metronome to take to the task. The final influence to this rock crusade, Max helped shaped the final sound that has become William ShatNa's Pants.

With 18 songs down (and many more in the works), a self-titled EP now released, and another one on the way..... Melbourne's WSP is ready to rock your pants off!

Visit the WSP website at http://wspband.com to learn more about the band and download your free mp3s of their first release.

    GEAR WANTED

  • Guitar promo catalogues:
A good friend of ours here at bmusic is after any old catalogues from days gone by. At the moment he's particularly keen to get a hold of any Washburn catalogues from the late '70's. Those that feature the Washburn Wing Series of basses and guitars would be of particular interest.

  • Second-hand saxes, clarinets and flutes. We are looking for good quality, good condition, saxophones, clarinets and flutes to help out those parents who are a little dubious about their child's level of commitment to their chosen instrument and, subsequently, don't want to spend a bomb on what might turn out to be a fad. If you or your kids have taken up the horn but chucked it in, don't take it to Cashies. Brands like Yamaha, Yanigasawa, Selmer, Buescher etc. are always welcome at bmusic.

  • Marshall JCM800's. That's right, we STILL want 'em. JCM800 2203 and 2204 models.

  • If there's something you've been trying to get your hands on, let us know and we will list it here for you. You never know.

If you spot something in the U.S. or Canada you're keen on let us know. We have contacts in those territories who, for a small fee, can act on your behalf in any transactions and make sure you get your stuff safe and sound.

    THE WEEK AHEAD IN MUSIC

  • In 1964, Beatles manager Brian Epstein turned down a 3 1/2 million pound offer to buy out the Beatles management contract. The offer came from a group of U.S. businessmen.

In 1966, the Rolling Stones began what was to be their last British tour for more than four years. Joining them on the bill were the Ike and Tina Turner Revue and the Yardbirds.

In 1966, Jimi Hendrix and his manager Chas Chandler arrived in London from New York, where Chandler discovered Hendrix working in Greenwich go-go clubs. Chandler convinced Hendrix that Britain would be more receptive to his style. During the trans-atlantic flight, Hendrix changed the spelling of his first name from Jimmy to Jimi.

In 1969, John Lennon recorded "Cold Turkey" with a backing band that included Eric Clapton, Klaus Voorman, Yoko Ono and Ringo Starr.

In 1971, Pink Floyd became the first rock group to play at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. They performed "Atom Heart Mother," which had been released as an album the previous year.

In 1974, Bachman Turner Overdrive's "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" was released.

In 1975, soul singer Jackie Wilson suffered a heart attack while performing at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Due to the heart attack, Wilson suffered brain damage and lapsed into a coma. Ironically, he was in the middle of singing one of his biggest hits, "Lonely Teardrops," and was two words into the line, "....my heart is crying" when he collapsed. He was 41 years old.

In 1976, The Beatles appeared on the cover of TIME magazine.

In 1977, the first Elvis Presley convention was held in Memphis, Tennessee.

In 1980, David Bowie replaced Philip Anglim in the title role of the hit Broadway play, "The Elephant Man," in New York City.

In 1980, John Lennon signed with Geffen Records.

In 1989, all-girl pop/rock group The Bangles officially broke up.

In 1991, co-founding Guns 'N' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin quit the band. He was later replaced by Gilby Clarke.

In 1991, fans lined up at record stores across the globe as two simultaneously-released albums by Guns N' Roses - "Use Your Illusion One" and "Use Your Illusion Two" - went on sale at midnight.

In 1992, Bruce Springsteen and his band played "MTV Unplugged" but made one slight change. They played all electric instruments, prompting MTV to rename the show "MTV Plugged".

In 2002, The Australian promoter who was to bring former Beach Boy Brian Wilson to Australia for his first ever solo tour was arrested on fraud charges. Ben Beath was alleged to have been behind a $19m fraud and had paid Wilson $250,000 as a deposit on the tour. The promoter was charged with "obtaining financial advantage by deception". Reports stated Beath had already spent $3m of the money raised. There was also suggestion Wilson may be legally responsible for handing back the stolen money.

In 2002, a cornoer's toxicology report found that Drowning Pool singer Dave Williams' death was due to natural causes. It was concluded that the 30-year-old singer died from cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle. Williams' condition, concentric left ventricular hypertrophy, prevented blood flow from the left ventricle to the right. Williams was never diagnosed with the disease, the cause of which is unknown. Nasal swabs indicated no traces of cocaine and none was present in his system.

In 2004, Yusaf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, was disallowed entry into the United States after flying there with his daughter. The U.S. government has Yusaf on a "no fly" list, claiming links with terrorists. A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security made the statement, "Yusuf Islam has been placed on the watch lists because of activities that could potentially be related to terrorism. It's a serious matter." Yusaf was not impressed but didn't say a lot, returning to the UK after his refusal of entry order was given.
Read more about Yusaf Islam and his post-Cat Stevens work in our Where Are They Now? feature HERE.

In 2004 the former manager of Australia's inaugural Popstars product, Bardot, successfully sued the Popstars show's producers for breach of contract. A counter-claim was made against the manager, Grant Thomas, but he still walked out with around 40 grand after paying out the counter-claim was also successful. Sadly, I'd be surprised if the girls themselves ever saw anything like that amount of money whilst working as Bardot.
