bmusic Newsletter No.231 August 14th - August 20th 2006 So we're down to eight in RockStar: Supernova. Aussie Toby is still in the running and rocked up an old classic "Burning Down The House" this week to keep himself amongst the top contenders. It's getting a little hard to call now, as with last year's season, creative editing makes it difficult to pinpoint exactly what's going on. Zayra certainly surprised this week with a very good vocal performance on "All The Young Dudes", much better than the last couple of weeks. Of course she didn't tame down the outfit, far from it! The others remaining are Ryan, Dilana, Storm, Patrice, Magni and Lukas. The latter two were called up for the encores this past week. Magni's indeed was worthy, Lukas' maybe, but I'm kind of against the grain on my opinion of his rendition of Radiohead's "Creep". In last year's series Marty performed the same song, and about as well. It's a tough, tough tune to sing, but Radiohead's Thom Yorke pulls off the falsetto and the big note live, and even belts the big one out a little longer in his live cuts I've seen. So it's not one of those male vocal things you can pass off as studio only and, therefore, underdo it a little live, Thom does it, I didn't rate Lukas' attempt on it. Not to mention the fact that the Supernova guys bang on on occasion about the "interpretation" of the song and honouring the original intent and such. Radiohead's "Creep" is about as anti-Lukas blinged out attitude when performing as you can get. He should have performed it the way he was seen to be rehearsing it in the lead-up episode when the contenders got their songs and such, solo guy with a guitar standing in semi-darkness. Storm and Dilana are the two big chances if a female is to take this thing out, obviously now seeing as there is only one other female left and she's often found herself in the bottom three anyway, that being Patrice. This is where perhaps the editing comes into play for mine. If you've seen Storm Large in her performances with Storm Inc. or Storm Large & The Balls, she's incredible! She is more rock than she's either been willing to impart or been able to impart on the show. She has a vast vocal range, something we have seen a glimmer of in the last couple of performances, and maybe it's this she's trying to demonstrate with the limited song choices she has before she brings back the rock guns she had early on in the piece when we get to the pointier end of the show. She could be holding her cards close to her chest because, as far as what I can see from her past versus Dilana's past and present, she has the slight edge over Dilana. A couple of people have e-mailed me over the past couple of weeks telling em they missed the first series of Rockstar with INXS and are enjoying the current one so they're hungry for some info or footage of the first series. YouTube.com has plenty of the performances available, take special interest in Aussie Mig and definitely seek out his rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" to see a great vocal performance but that fantastic house band at their very best pulling the whole thing off completely live. Others to check out are Marty and JD, the other top runners from the series with JD having taken it out. If you could see the series in full you'd likely draw the parallels I have started to draw between JD's in-house attitude and persona and that of this year's Lukas. Females Jordis and Suzie were amongst the frontrunners in their gender last year, but it was always going to be hard seeing INXS choose a female to front their band. You can buy a Rockstar:INXS kind of "best of" that mainly follows the six finalists, it's called "RockStar: INXS The DVD". Whether there are any other DVDs of the series I don't know. A repeat Where Are They Now? this week but with some updates, both dated and current, many with the help of the former bandmates themselves. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - UGLY KID JOE (UPDATED)
|
Ugly Kid Joe formed in Isla Vista, near Santa Barbara, California in 1989 when vocalist Whitfield Crane teamed up with guitarist Klaus Eichstadt.
Soon bassist Cordell Crockett, whose father was owner of Guitar Player magazine at the time, joined the Crane and Eichstadt, with
drummer Mark Davis to follow soon after. After beginning their journey as SWAT (Suburban White Alcoholic Trash) the band soon landed a support slot for Pretty Boy Floyd as they made their way through Santa Barbara. The band parodied the name Pretty By Floyd by tagging themselves as the antithesis, Ugly Kid Joe. The show never actually went ahead but the new name stuck. After playing less than twenty shows in their native Santa Barbara, UKJ were picked up by Mercury Records off-shoot label, stardog records. The band's demo "As Ugly As They Wanna Be" had made it from the hands of a local DJ to stardog and the label set about sending UKJ to the top. The lead single from the EP "Everything About You" rocketed to Number 1 in the U.S., with particular thanks going to it's inclusion in the popular movie "Wayne's World". By 1993 the band had released their first full-length album "America's Least Wanted". Original drummer Mark Davis had since left the band, reportedly due to some mental health problems. He was replaced by ex-Wraithchild drummer Shannon Larkin. Second guitarist Roger Lahr had also been replaced by ex-Sugartooth axeman Dave Fortman. The album included the smash "Everything About You" from the group's first release, along with their massively popular version of Harry Chapin's "Cats In The Cradle". |
