Newsletter No.230
August 7th - August 13th 2006

Prolific songwriter and frontman for 60s psychedelic West Coast US band Love, Arthur Lee passed away this week after a battle with leukemia. Although Love were shortlived, lasting only around three years, Arthur Lee continued to write for both himself and other artists. One of his early songwriting credits outside his own recorded material was for Rosa Lee Brooks, a recording on which Jimi Hendrix provided session guitar. Other artists to have recorded Lee's songs include Boo Radleys, Alice Cooper, The Damned, The Hooters, Lenny Kravitz, Lime Spiders, Matthew Sweet, Ramones, Robert Plant, Sarah Brightman and Urge Overkill. Arthur had returned to performing live in recent years, seeing a revival in his material of the 60s. In late June Robert Plant, Ryan Adams, Ian Hunter, Nils Lofgren, Yo La Tengo and Garland Jefferys performed together at a benefit for Lee at New York's Beacon Theatre.

Rockstar: Supernova continues to lull on somewhat this past week, me thinks a shift in gears is in the works, evidenced by the latest elimination. No more time for fun, I believe the band know full well it's time to get down to business. Now is the time to watch closely to see if the band and/or producers influence public votes more by either comments and/or careful editing so they can start gearing it toward the contenders they actually would like to select from ultimately. Aussie Toby is in a relatively safe position at present and has been impressing with some good chops, particularly last time out with "Pennyroyal Tea" I thought. When he really opens up it's great to listen to, I look forward to hearing more of that sort of stuff in coming weeks as all performers step it up. He seems to hit some better diction and pitch when he opens up his throat more and he's doing that more and more. How that Zayra sheila is still there I'll never know! If she's to get through this week surely she has to pull out something very special, as I said, time to get fair dinkum for the band.

A brand new Where Are They Now? by request this week, a girl most would likely have written off as a one hit wonder, never to be seen again. Subscriber Victor put us onto this artist and we thank him, as we do all those who make requests, for taking the time to write and to throw the ideas at us. Some are easier to achieve than others, and we have works in progress from requests dating back years. Sometimes info is easier to come by than others.

  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - MARTIKA

The first part of Martika's (born Marta Marrero in 1969) career is worth looking at from part of an official bio, the last sentence of this concise piece being of particular interest:

Martika immediately took to the silver screen in the hit movie ‘ANNIE’, and never looked back. Performing as ‘Gloria’ on the hit children’s television show ‘Kids Incorporated’ (now a cult classic, spawning many other stars such as Mario Lopez, Stacey ‘Fergie’ Ferguson, Shanice Wilson, Jennifer Love Hewitt, etc.) catapulted Martika to the awareness of Columbia Records. In no time, Martika was out on the road touring and promoting her self-titled debut CD, which garnered several top ten hits, and the Billboard topping number one hit ‘Toy Soldiers’. 3 Million units, and many live appearances and videos later, Martika completed her second CD. ‘Martika’s Kitchen’, Co-Produced by Prince, went on to score even more success, and featured the haunting hit ‘Love, Thy Will Be Done’. Worldwide success, and the hectic schedule of constant travel and touring, led Martika to take a much needed, if lengthy sabbatical away from the music business. Staying out of the limelight, Martika has had time to reflect on her past success at such a young age, and has deepened her resolve to control her destiny in the music business. Vowing to never set foot in the studio until she found the right vehicle…………
Now, in reality, her second album, "Martika's Kitchen", was very successful outside her native United States but not so there. It dropped off the charts fairly quickly in the US and Martika turned her hand, at the urging of her agent, to film and television scoring. She did enter the studio sooner than later, in fact almost at the same time "Martika's Kitchen" was being released. In 1990 she wrote and recorded the song "Blue Eyes are Sensitive to the Light" for the soundtrack to the film "Arachnophobia". Unfortunately the producers of the album did not like her vocals and so the song was re-recorded by Sara Hickman for the film, though Martika retained her writing credit.

Martika attempted to revitalize her acting career by playing lounge singer/undercover cop Delia Mendez on the early 1990s cop show "Wiseguy", but the part was a temporary one and eventually she faded from the public eye around 1993. "The Best of Martika: More Than You Know", a Greatest Hits album, was released in 1997 and sold a half a million copies worldwide but didn't see a re-emergence of Martika herself, she remained out of the spotlight.

In 2000 Martika resurfaced, singing backing vocals and contributing lyrics to a number of Latin pop projects, the genre enjoying an explosion of sorts at the time. She launched an official website, martika.net, through which she released two new tracks that she intended to be a part of a new solo album she was working on. The single released to mp3.com, "The Journey", by Martika saw only around 5,000 hits and, with no major label interest in the new project, Martika again returned to relative obscurity and martika.net was closed down.

At a castle in the South of France Martika had a chance meeting with Michael Mozart, a session musician who had toured, recorded and performed with legendary musicians such as Dave Mason (Traffic), Leon Russell,Doc Severensin, Whitney Houston, Carole King,Ringo Starr, No Doubt,Shirley Murdock, Roger Troutman, Charlie Wilson, Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Jefferson Starship,Vinnie Calliuta, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, and many more. They later married and in 2003 launched a new project together, Oppera. The goth pop/rock band released their debut album, "Violince", in 2004.

In the same year Eminem released "Like A Toy Soldier" which sampled Martika's hit "Toy Soldiers". The Number One hit for Eminem also brought Martika back into the spotlight and an earlier UK Greatest Hits release was repackaged and released as "Toy Soldiers: The Best of Martika".

Oppera released their second album, a self-titled effort, in 2005 and have played a huge number of club dates before that release and since. At present they are recording their next full length which was originally scheduled for a 2006 release date but looks likely to be pushed back as work continues to the present day on recording for that album in Ohio.

It's likely the short bio at the start of this feature, taken from some of Oppera's management company's promotion, was written with her feelings toward the industry not only based in her time as the million seller most people recognise Martika as, but as a result of her failed attempt to launch her solo career in 2000 with the music she wanted to have released. With no major label interest for that project yet being pimped about by CBS in her younger years she was more than a little miffed at the industry that had rocketed her to stardom and seen her dropped like a rock in little more than two years.

Drop us an e-mail if you'd like us to track down some of stars of the past for you and feature them in Where Are They Now? or if you have anything to add or correct from one of our features.

    THIS WEEK'S MUSIC QUOTE

"Life is like music, it must be composed by ear, feeling and instinct, not by rule. Nevertheless one had better know the rules, for they sometimes guide in doubtful cases, though not often."

THIS WEEK'S FEATURE ARTICLE - PURSUING A CAREER IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS

This week's Feature Article is another excellent one from Bobby Borg. Bobby is the author of "The Musician's Handbook: A Practical Guide To Understanding The Music Business" published by Billboard Books. This article gives some tips on pursuing a career in the music caper, just as it's title suggests. Perhaps the sub-title, "Important Tips to Consider on Your Path to Success", tells more about the article and it's content. A very good read with valuable information and wisdom and one great quote from John Rzenik of Goo Goo Dolls fame. "Record companies sell the dream. They never talk about the struggle."

FEATURED ARTIST - THE HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL MOUSEMOON

A unique blend of awkwardly written beats, soaring vocals, explosive guitars, inspired lyrics, atmospheric projections, costumery and stage theatrics, junkyard percussion & a crafted vibe.
A group of many, with 5 core members, ‘the hauntingly beautiful mousemoon' are expanded by a dedicated group of creative people focusing on sound, projections, installation art, costume design, photography, video, merchandising, and a myriad of talented performance artists such as stilt walkers, beat poets, dancers, life sized puppets and the like. This team put on events of an unusual nature, aspiring to create something, quite separate to themselves as an entity, which can be looked upon as more & hopefully enthuse folk.

If you had to categorize Mousemoon musically, think about the love child of Pink Floyd, and, say, Nine Inch Nails...throw in a bit of Led Zeppelin, some Jeff Buckley/Robert Plant vocals, some Lemmy and Townsend stage antics add a dash of The Darkness’ sense of humour, the genre-hopping eclecticism of The Beatles and some current Radiohead/Sigur Ros for up-to- date-ed-ness and there you have it.
To hear The Hauntingly Beautiful Mousemoon and learn more about this extraordinarily creative and diverse group of musicians and artists visit their sensational official site mousemoon.net. If you're bored with the regular old band websites one most often sees you simply have to visit Mousemoon's site, even if the music is of no interest whatsoever to you.

    GEAR WANTED

  • Guitar promo catalogues:
A good friend of ours here at bmusic is after any old catalogues from days gone by. At the moment he's particularly keen to get a hold of any Washburn catalogues from the late '70's. Those that feature the Washburn Wing Series of basses and guitars would be of particular interest.

  • Second-hand saxes, clarinets and flutes. We are looking for good quality, good condition, saxophones, clarinets and flutes to help out those parents who are a little dubious about their child's level of commitment to their chosen instrument and, subsequently, don't want to spend a bomb on what might turn out to be a fad. If you or your kids have taken up the horn but chucked it in, don't take it to Cashies. Brands like Yamaha, Yanigasawa, Selmer, Buescher etc. are always welcome at bmusic.

  • Marshall JCM800's. That's right, we STILL want 'em. JCM800 2203 and 2204 models.

  • If there's something you've been trying to get your hands on, let us know and we will list it here for you. You never know.

If you spot something in the U.S. or Canada you're keen on let us know. We have contacts in those territories who, for a small fee, can act on your behalf in any transactions and make sure you get your stuff safe and sound.

    THE WEEK AHEAD IN MUSIC

  • Events
  • In 1955, Savoy Records announced that those wanting to record "cover" versions of songs must obtain permission from the U.S. copyright office before doing so. This was in response to the vast amount of pop hits of the day which were remakes, particularly of R&B hits, which were being recorded with no permission at all.

In 1959, the beginning of the end of the Platters' career began when members Tony Williams, David Lynch, Alex Hodge and Paul Rabi were all arrested in a hotel in Cincinnati. Detectives found the four black men in various stages of undress with four nineteen year old women, three of whom were white, after a tip-off from an employee of the hotel.
The men were charged with aiding and abetting prostitution, lewdness and assignation. They were all acquitted in December of the same year but the episode, which many suggest was fueled by racism, took its toll on the Platters' career.

In 1969, the famous cover shot of The Beatles Abbey Road album was taken outside Abbey Road Studios in London.

In 1969, Diana Ross invited 350 guests to a Beverly Hills club to see the newest Motown act, The Jackson 5.

In 1970, Janis Joplin bought a tombstone for blues singer Bessie Smith's unmarked grave in a Philadelphia cemetery. Less than two months later, Joplin herself was dead of a drug overdose. Smith had died following an auto accident in 1942 at the age of 37.

In 1970, Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Looking Out My Back Door" was released.

In 1972, Elvis and Priscilla Presley filed for divorce after just over three years of marriage.

In 1973, after seeing KISS play at a New York hotel, producer Bill Aucion offered to become their manager and promised the glam rockers a record deal.

In 1980, Todd Rundgren's home in Woodstock, New York was invaded by four masked men. Rundgren, his girlfriend and three houseguests were bound and gagged while the masked men stripped the house of valuables. Reportedly, one of the thieves hummed Rundgren's "I Saw the Light" during the heist.

In 1985, Michael Jackson paid US$47.5 million for the ATV music catalogue, which includes 251 Lennon/McCartney songs. Jackson is rumoured to have since signed over half of the catalogue to Sony Music to cover debts he'd incurred with the company.

In 1985, Duran Duran's lead singer Simon LeBon was rescued by the British Royal Navy after spending 40 minutes trapped in an underwater air pocket following the capsizing of his boat during a race off the English coast.

In 1986, after serving his sentence for drug possession and weapons violations David Crosby was released from prison.

In 1989, Bon Jovi's "New Jersey" was the first album to be released legally in the Soviet Union.

In 1990, singer Curtis Mayfield was paralyzed after a tower fell on him before a concert in Brooklyn, New York.

In 1992, fans rioted at a Metallica/Guns 'N' Roses show in Montreal, Canada. Fans were displeased after both bands cut their sets short. Metallica singer/guitarist James Hetfield was injured by a pyrotechnic explosion and Axl W. Rose lost his voice.

In 2002, rock 'n' roll memorabilia sunk to new depths when the tour bus Drowning Pool singer Dave Williams died on was offered for auction by it's owner on auction site eBay. Action was promptly taken and the offensive listing was removed.

In 2002, Dave Williams, frontman for up and coming heavy rock group 'Drowning Pool' was found dead on the band's tour bus by a crew member.
