Brains Lessons

Brains Lessons DVD
Finally a video with attitude! Primus' drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia brings us this fun and informative DVD suitable for players of all levels.

"Brain" breaks down Go Go, Funk Patterns, the Ostinato and the Up Down Technique in his contemporary and alternative way. Special features include: Photo Gallery, Exclusive Video Footage From Brain's Home Library, Interactive Drum Set, and more. ALL Region DVD.

If you've not heard of Brian "Brains" Mantia here's a little rundown on one of the world's best drummers:

Brains took up the drums when he was 16 and really put himself into it. He worked his way up to studies with Scott Morris in San Francisco, then to the Percussion Institute of Technology in Hollywood, then classical snare studies. He wanted to read and know everything there was to know about playing drums.
His recording career includes dates with artists as diverse as Tom Waits, Jon Hassell, Godflesh, Giant Robot, and MCM and the Monster. In the mid 80s, he became a member of the Limbomaniacs, a band made up of friends from San Jose, Cupertino, and Mountain View, California. The bands mighty rhythm section was quite capable of thrashing rhythmic assaults like "Maniac" and the insistent "Shake It" with Troublefunk's T-Bone. Many of the bands that Brain was in in The Bay Area in the late 80's were defined by the press as "Funk Thrash" because of the common influences of funk and hard rock.
In 1996, Primus announced they were parting ways with their drummer, Tim Alexander. He was replaced by Brian "Brain" Mantia, who made his debut on The Brown Album, which was released in 1997. The covers EP Rhinoplasty followed in 1998, and a year later, Primus returned with Antipop.
Brain's Kit

When Guns N' Roses drummer Josh Freese left GN'R to join A Perfect Circle after his contract expired in March 2000, the drummer slot was left open. Buckethead, already working on the new album, Chinese Democracy, had Axl bring in one his friends and former bandmate, Brain. Brain had just completed the supporting tour for Primus' AntiPop and was looking for something to do. Les Claypool spoke of Tim Alexander returning to Primus to replace Brain but that never eventuated, Claypool later announcing that Primus were officially on hiatus. Throughout 2000, Brain recorded drum tracks for the new GN'R album. He also performed at the band's two shows in Las Vegas and at Rock In Rio 3 and he was taking part in the recent tour unitl Axl, in his inimitable fashion, put an end to the tour.
For all intents and purposes Brain is still a member of Primus as he never officially left and the band never officially broke up. In Brain's spare time he's come up with this awesome tutorial DVD with more than just a few lessons. The special added features are a treat all on their own. So if you are a drummer looking for some inspiration or some insight into the one of the best drumming brains (excuse the pun) around then look no further than Brains Lessons.
